SYRAHMI DEMI SHIRAZ 2019

HEATHCOTE, VICTORIA
FORWARD GUZZLE HERB
CLASSIC / 750ML

80% whole bunch Shiraz sourced from multiple granite heavy vineyards located in Heathcote. A bright aromatic Shiraz that has fine tannins and herbal spice. Easy drinking - all day.

Very bright crimson and purple in colour. Intense perfume of lifted wild raspberries, black olives, soy and turned earth. Crushed granite, red and black cherries, graphite and gun smoke with energetic freshness and length, the palate shows the best of Heathcote with a light touch. Savoury dried herbs and spice, graphite and tapenade again, with very fine tannin coming from the 80% whole bunches during ferment, balanced red fruits leading through a long savoury finish. Concentrated but light on its feet.

The name Syrahmi is a made up from “Syrah” the French word for Shiraz and “Ami” meaning friend. The idea being a “friendly Shiraz” or “A friend of Shiraz”. Syrahmi began in 2004 when Adam Foster gave up his day job as a Chef to pursue his dream of becoming a wine maker. He purchased his first tonne and a half of grapes from Heathcote winery and the dream was born.

Each year grapes for Syrahmi are sourced and selected from different vineyards in the Heathcote region. Thus each year the wines are given a different name to reflect the vintage.

RHONE VALLEY, FRANCE
EARTH BOLD PLUM
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

The wine is predominately made up of powerful fruit from Gigondas, Southern Rhone Valley. The wine has weight, but also maintains a degree of elegance. It is fermented in concrete and aged in both large oak vessels and concrete. Ruby fruits, a hint of olive tapenade and filling-fine tannins.

From the Producer: Domaine Saint-Damien is run by Joel and Amie Saurel and their son Romain who has now taken charge of the winemaking. The Saurel family had been tending vineyards for four generations, dating back to 1821, and until recently had been selling all of the grapes to negociants. In 1996 Joel resumed producing wine at the estate and in 1998 they brought on consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie. Vinification is classic with wines being fermented in large old cement tanks and aged in either cement tanks or large old foudres for the Gigondas.

Today the estate is comprised of 17 hectares of vineyards of which 12 are in Gigondas. All their vineyards are certified organic since 2012. The vines are an average age of 50 years and are very low yielding. The wines of Gigondas are bottled according to individual terroir (particularly soil type) known as the Saint Damien Trilogy.

PROPHETS ROCK DRY RIESLING NEW ZEALAND 2018

PROPHETS ROCK DRY RIESLING NEW ZEALAND 2018

CENTRAL OTAGO, NEW ZEALAND
CHAMOMILE ACID APPLE
CLASSIC / 750ML

Handpicked and whole bunch pressed on a long slow cycle. The juice undergoes fermentation in old oak and can sometimes bubble away for as long as four months. The riesling is unbelievablyy complex with crushed apples, chamomile, oak weight and acid for days.

From the Producer: Intense aromas of lemon, lime, and grapefruit with green, crunchy apple and hints of chamomile. The palate is lively and fresh, citrus, apple, and subtle nectarine flavours with zingy acidity and a chalky mineral note on the long, lingering finish.

This wine represents a very small portion of our overall production but has always been a strong focus for Prophet’s Rock. We farm our aromatic whites to the same high standard in the vineyard as our top Pinot Noir, and take time through all aspects of production to ensure that the wine we release is the best reflection of the site it can be. This is a dry style with bright aromatics and great concentration. The freshness and texture make it an easy food match.
We have a little over one hectare of Riesling which is located on our spectacular Rocky Point Vineyard. This very steep site has schist-based soil with high mineral content and low vigour. The Riesling block has a northerly aspect with large rafts or slabs of solid schist throughout.

A strong focus on viticulture is the foundation of the winemaking approach. Yields consistently average 28-30hl/ha or approximately 3.5-4ton/hl. In the vineyard this equates to one bunch maximum per shoot, no shoulders or wings, and a further green-thin at veraison.

The handpicked fruit is 100% whole-bunch pressed over 5-6 hours and fermented using only indigenous ‘wild’ yeast in old barrels. Fermentation typically takes 3-4 months, and the finished wine is then aged without racking on gross lees until bottling just before the following vintage. The wine is bottled under Diam cork and is only released after at least one year in bottle.

I worked as winemaker at Kuentz-Bas in Alsace, and it is this experience that has helped shape my approach with aromatic whites here in Central Otago

I believe that on a foundation of low-yield, Riesling provides one of the most site-expressive wines in the world. Since first release this wine has been one of the strongest preforming Riesling in Central Otago.

It gets the same meticulous treatment in the vineyard as our top Pinot Noir, and our yields are extremely low, creating a concentrated expression of our unique site. Averaging only 300 cases per vintage, our Dry Riesling is a rare find. The vinification is heavily influenced by Paul’s time in Alsace, where use of wild yeast, multiple small vessels and long ageing are the norm.

After lengthy slow ferments, the various components are aged on their yeast lees before bottling. The wine is cellared for at least two years before release. This wine has been extremely well-reviewed since the first release in 2006.

GEORGE DESCHAMPS PETIT CHABLIS 2019

CHABLIS, FRANCE
FOSSIL CITRUS FRESH
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

Gently harvested and whole bunch pressed to stainless steel vats where it is aged on lees. A refreshing Petit Chablis made by Guillaume Vrignaud (Domaine Vrignaud) the Grandson of George Deschamps. The wine is unmistakable Chablissiene.

From the producer: Everyone has their interpretation of what Chablis should be, the style it should take. Operating 29 hectares around Fontenay-près-Chablis, Domaine Vrignaud has a very specific approach to the terroir. To be turned towards the future is first of all to be aware of its heritage and to wish in every way to defend it. At the Domaine, this involves knowing the plots located on the Portlandian and Kimmeridgian strata, taking care of the vines, whether they are clones or whether they come from mass selection and naturally organic farming. Organic Agriculture is not an end, it is a way of thinking, a means of revealing the terroir.

A wine is born in the vineyard, not in the cellar. Pressing, vinification limiting inputs, the use of vats or barrels bring to light the soils, subsoils, climate, berries and know-how of the Domaine. This know-how and this constant attention nourish a style of Chablis wines day after day. More than a style of wine, it is the culmination of a philosophy. This philosophy, our philosophy, is balance. The balance between the vines and the environment, the berries and the geology, the wines and the emotions that they must provoke in each of the tasters.

BEST'S YOUNG VINES PINOT MEUNIER 2020

GREAT WESTERN VICTORIA
FORWARD CHIRPY CANDID
CLASSIC / 750ML / 12.5%

Best's have done an amazing job at putting Pinot Meunier on the map. Meunier has notoriously thin skins, with low pigment (anthocyanins) - the combination of these two characteristics lead to a light bright wine honing into a primary fruit profile. The young vines Meunier hovers on the edge of the rose-red wine spectrum.

From the producer: Generally used in sparkling wine production, Pinot Meunier is rarely made as a straight table red wine. However, at Best’s, we have been producing small quantities of single varietal red wines from Pinot Meunier since the 1960s, with the vineyards and wines gaining cult-like status (and loyal followers) along the way. Although eminently drinkable now, previous examples of this wine prove that it will age gracefully for many years to come.  Try this, if you can, in 5-10 years time.

YARRA VALLEY, MELBOURNE
STONEFRUIT TIGHT SPRING
CLASSIC / 750ML

Acid forward Chardonnay comprised of declassified single vineyard barrels. A consistent Yarra Valley Chardonnay that delivers year in and year out.

From the Producer: The Yarra Valley label is the entry into our Chardonnay wines. ‘Yarra Valley’ is a blend of declassified barrels from our grower vineyards and the Mac Forbes single vineyard sites. They represent a snapshot from across the valley and our vineyards. Generally, they can be enjoyed young but cellaring will reward with increased complexity.

The 2020 season in the Yarra Valley will forever be remembered as a highly unusual and impossible to predict vintage. Significant weather events during flowering meant low yields, and erratic temperatures in December and January saw unprecedented ripening behaviour across many varieties. February rains were both welcome and anxiety-inducing, but ultimately the maturity and stability of the vines in our best parcels allowed fruit quality to shine through.

CLASSIC / 750ML

A star-studded blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Favorita made by one of the most renowned producers in Piedmont. Medium-bodied with a swarm of aromatics, high fruit tones, leather, dusty tannins and a wedge of oak.

From the Distributor: Our Langhe Rosso is a hug from Piedmont. It’s an invitation to explore its different varieties and to get to know its personality. From young vineyards, it is a fruity, delicately complex wine - an ideal companion at the table. It’s predominately Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, with smaller quantities of Freisa, Albarossa, Pinot Noir. Each vineyard is harvested when it reaches perfect ripeness. The varieties are vinified one by one, to express their personality and uniqueness. The wine is aged for 18-24 months partially in steel and then in first-, second- and third-use pièces. - Giuseppe Vaira

G.D. Vajra - “a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level”, as Antonio Galloni calls it - is run in the second generation by Giuseppe, Isidoro and Francesca Vaira, lovingly overseen by father Aldo and mother Milena. It was Aldo that founded G.D. Vajra, kicking off with a counter-cultural twist by returning to his ancestors’ land in the early ‘70s, when all else were deserting the countryside in droves. That spirit of tradition with an adaptive streak characterises this far-sighted outfit. Indeed, Aldo’s decision to embrace the rogue ‘j’ on the label – a print error that happens to hark back to the pre-1920s spelling of the family name – says a lot about the clan’s capacity to roll with it and nimbly fuse its roots with the future.

MARGAN BREAKING GROUND ALBARINO 2021

HUNTER VALLEY, NSW
PEAR VIBRANT CONCRETE
CLASSIC / SUSTAINABLE / 750ML

Produced and polished by the magnificent Ollie Margan in Broke Fordwich. An electric white wine offering cut pear, fresh botanicals and enforcing acidity. An exciting step forward for the Margan Family and their wines.

From the Producer: It seemed like the acidity of the Alby this year was never going to soften below verjuice level, but patience prevailed. Four-ish days on skins until indigenous fermentation kicked off. Pressed to ‘Cleopatra’, our Nico Velo truncated concrete tank. Rack and returned; rested on fine lees for four months. The concrete really enhanced the tension in the wine by tightening up the dry extracts derived from the period on skins. Bright aromatics and juicy orchard fruit mid palate. Unfined/unfiltered.

I particularly wanted to craft wines with texture and energy and place emphasis on echoing the dolorite rich volcanic soils of Broke Fordwich, Wonnarua country where my family has been growing grapes and making wine for more than 25 years. This unique sub region of the Hunter Valley is defined by the Fordwich Sill, which provides a strong buffering capacity due to enriched ionic concentration in the soil. In short, flavour is able to develop in full, without the sacrifice of acidity.

These wines favour vineyard personality over technical precision. Artifice is eschewed almost entirely, used simply to frame the distinctive fruit profile of our sites. We are extremely proud of our 100 hectares of self-managed, sustainably certified vines and these wines intend to provide a lens for our love of farming and gentle hand in the winery.

FRESH PEPPER BRAMBLE

The Organic grape grower Thibault Charnay has finally made his first wine and it's a cracker. Sourced from his own small vineyard based in Anse. The vineyard is trellised on golden limestone that gives the wine a briny edge. In the glass, it is peppery, with red-berried compote, bramble tartness and chalky tannins.

From the Distributor After creating and running his own construction company for nearly a decade, Thibault Charnay returned to the family Domaine in 2012 to work in the vineyards around his hometown. He purchased a few additional hectares of vines, and today, he farms 12 hectares of Gamay on the classic Pierres dorées (golden limestone) around Anse in the southern part of the Beaujolais.

For many years, thanks to his ready access to tractors and other machinery, Thibault helped his wife Emilie’s family carry out the organic treatments in their vineyards. Inspired and nudged by his brother in law Raphael at Domaine Saint Cyr, Thibault decided to convert his own Domaine to organic farming in 2019, as well as vinify and bottle his own production (rather than sell it off to the négociants).

ALESSANDRO VIOLA NERO D'AVOLA ROSÉ 2020

SICILY ITALY
QUENCHING WATERMELON OREGANO
LEFT OF CENTRE / NO SO2 / ORGANIC / 750ML

How satisfying the fragrant, refreshing and mineral wines are from Alessandro Viola. Following in his fathers footsteps, these are wines full of character. They have a simple rusticity with refreshing clean edge acidity. The rosé is made from 100% Nero d'Avola from some of his younger vines grown in clay and sandy soils 250 meters in elevation. The wines are wild fermented and aged in steel tank for 6 months before bottling. No so2 is added. The wines are bright and taste like crunchy watermelon juice, seed and all, seasoned with white pepper and wild Sicilian mountain herbs. How good.

From the distributor: Alessandro Viola father’s was a vine grower although other than a few bottles of homemade wine he never saw the fruit of his hard work in the vineyard into bottle. Alessandro was fascinated in grape growing from an early age and after a few vintages of self-teaching he decided to get a formal education and study oenology. During his university studies he steered away from the mechanical side of winemaking he was being taught and decided to study the science. The idea that nothing needed to be added or taken away from the wine if the grapes, soil and winemaking were all working together became his mantra. After his university degree he worked in the north of Italy and then for a larger winemaker on Mt Etna, however he had never forgotten the wines he had made before, without anything added and made by hand. So he started making wine for himself, first with a friend Uva Tantum, and now alone using his name Alessandro Viola. He cultivates 7 hectares of organically managed vines worked strictly by hand. The vineyards are located in 2 areas, the first in Pietra Rinosa close to Alcamo in the north-western tip of Sicily, the soil is made of clay and the vineyards sit at 200m above sea level taking a large influence from the ocean. The second vineyards in Fastuchera are higher at 400 meters; the soil is calcareous producing more minerals driven and finer wines. He is strictly committed to growing and championing local varieties. Catarratto, Grillo, Nero D’avola and Nerello Mascalesse make up his repertoire. We are delighted to be bringing Alessandro’s hand made wines to Australia. His style is unique and his commitment to organic practices and no additions is something to behold.

WHITLANDS PLATEAU VICTORIA
SOLERA NUT ALTITUDE
CLASSIC / 11.5% / 750ML

A brilliantly off-kilter example of high country fizz. The uber-brut utilises a solera system to add structure and dimension to an already exciting chardonnay base wine. Zero dosage sharpens the palette and keeps the wine en pointe

From the producer: In 2OO7, I started making sparkling base from pinot noir fruit from the Holly’s Garden vineyard. At that stage, I had no idea how I’d get it to bottle, but believed the vineyard might produce extraordinary sparkling base – and it does. I strongly believe we make fabulous, distinctive sparkling wine from the same fruit every vintage. These days the free run juice is allowed to oxidise and is fermented mostly in large old oak, with a small proportion in tank and inoculated with approximately 5 per cent of the recommended dose of QA23 (a vinho Verde isolate, which produces a delightful tang). The low dose is used so that we get a long slow fermentation with a large number of generations of yeast. In this way, the yeast begins to find the ethanol toxic and produces mucyl polyproteins and gucyl polyglycerides.

PUNSET D'ALBA BARBERA 2019

ALBA, ITALY
CRANBERRY BALANCE TYPICITY
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

Old school Barbera, wetting acidity, mid-weight and ripe dark fruits. No oak is used at all. Telltale Barbera from Alba, Piedmonte.

From the producer: It is a historical memory that the Counts of Castelborgo used the Piedmontese dialect term Punset, which literally means "beautiful hill" or "point", to describe the only one of their estates that stood out from the autumn mists and could thus be admired from their castle.

On the other hand, it is the heritage of the Marcarino family to have a long history of winemaking since the succession of ownership of the vineyards on the hill, albeit for an exclusively family production.

In 1964 Renzo Marcarino officially started the activity bringing the first bottles of the Punset wine cellar on the market, but it was in the early 80s that a decisive choice, wanted and carried out by his daughter Marina, marked the company's turning point: to convert the entire cultivation to organic, eliminating all kinds of pesticides and all synthetic products. A demanding choice, conscious and immediately disciplined through the certification.

The grapes, cultivated according to organic farming methods, are carefully selected and harvested by hand, in perforated crates, and pressed, removing the stalks. In order to obtain a pleasant and harmonious wine, the harvest is delayed as much as possible. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with the help of indigenous yeasts. After soft racking, malolactic fermentation concludes the wine-making process; the wine is aged in cement tanks for a few months, at least until the first warmth, when it is prepared for bottling.

The ruby red color accompanies pleasant aromas of red berry fruit, intense and harmonious. The fruity aroma is also very evident on the palate, characterized by a not very intense acidity and a dry and clean finish. The pleasantness of this product is given by its frankness and typicality, so evident also thanks to the total absence of wood.

BARREL GENEROUS DOUGH
CLASSIC / 13.5% / 750ML

A good old fashioned Ozzie Chardonnay. A good tickle of quality new oak and nearly a year on lees. The Agios Dimitrios showcases all the good attributed of a broader Chardonnay without being overwhelming or one dimensional.

From the Producer: Life has its twists and turns. Sometimes the horizon is as direct as the crow flies, and other times, we take the scenic tour. Sven Joschke, born and raised in the Adelaide Hills, has definitely taken the long way home. Spending the last 15 years abroad and interstate, Sven decided to ditch his life as a Chartered Accountant and come back home to South Australia. Swapping the Casio and spreadsheets for his ultimate calling of wine, at least he can now claim market research when enjoying some plonk. Guided by 'Schwatta' and Shelly from Biscay Rd in Tanunda, and inspired by his experience making wine in Jura, France, the mission has been simple from the get go - make it delicious, work your backside off, do it with love and most importantly, let nature do the talking. Roping in two of his mates to the shenanigans, bringing Sven Joschke's wine to life has required many detours, back roads and long-cuts...but it's finally here. So enjoy the destination, crack a bottle of this delicious juice and get up to some inspired mischief.

PIERRE-MARIE CHEMETTE LES GRIOTTES 2019

BEAUJOLAIS, FRANCE
CHERRY BUNCH QUENCH
CLASSIC / 750ML

A serious Beaujolais that is still cheeky and light at heart. Grown on dark granitic soils, with carefully managed vineyards to keep yields down and wine complexity up! A charming Gamay with vibrant lifted fruits and a lovely stemmy edge that gives a sandy mouth feel. Very gluggable.

From the Producer: This Beaujolais cherrybomb is drawn from 20- to 40-year-old vines grown on dark granite soils around the homestead in Saint-Vérand (in southern Beaujolais). The winemaking here has remained unchanged for decades, with traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks and then maturation in both tank and ancient oak casks still the order of the day.

As opposed to his age-worthy Crus from Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, et al., Chermette's aim here is to produce something light-bodied, bright and cherry-fruited with reach-for-another-glass charm. So exuberant you could be tasting out of barrel. There's a gentle spicy complexity from the whole bunches matched by waves of crushed raspberry and spiced cherry. supported by mouth-watering acidity and silky tannins.

The late Marcel Lapierre once said of Beaujolais, “Ça se bois sous la douche.” (It’s a wine you can drink under the shower). While this captures the simple deliciousness of much Beaujolais, it doesn’t do justice to the wines being produced by the finest artisans like Pierre-Marie Chermette. Of the wines of Domaine du Vissoux we would be more likely to say, “Il est trop bon pour être bu sous la douche!” It’s too damn good to be drunk in the shower!  Beaujolais can be the most joyful, compelling and life-affirming of wines. Yet in the hands of a master it can also be a wonderfully refined, long-lived Burgundy. Domaine du Vissoux is a producer capable of fashioning such wines. This is why their wines can be found in many of France’s finest restaurants and why Vissoux remains the highest-rated Beaujolais producer in the leading French wine guide, Les Meilleurs Vins de France.

Owners Pierre-Marie and Martine Chermette were among the first in Beaujolais to use sustainable agricultural practices, shunning the use of any chemicals in the vineyard and encouraging as much life in the soil as possible. They prune hard to keep yields low, harvest by hand when the grapes are fully ripe and regularly carry out ‘green harvests’ to further reduce the yields and ensure full ripeness for the harvest. The wines are made with minimal intervention: wild yeasts, minimal sulphur additions and no filtering if possible. Ageing is in traditional up-to-the-ceiling, neutral oak casks.

2009 was the vintage Beaujolais needed. Their ripe, fleshy personalities made the region sexy all over again. Everyone loved them. So what about 2010? Surely not? No it can’t be? Can it? Yes indeed! Another brilliant vintage for Beaujolais (and also a brilliant year across most European wine regions). Stylistically, much like Burgundy to its north and indeed the Rhône to the south, the 2010 wines are more pure, more fragrant, juicier and brighter than 2009 - somehow with more mouth-watering exuberance. Sounds almost too good to be true? Just like in the Côte d’Or, 2010 will be the vintage that many Beaujolais lovers prefer. Both are great vintages but the ‘10’s are just finer. It will come down to a question of taste.

The Wines: To get specific, the two Villages cuvees are pure and crunchy, smothered in lovely bright fruit. Simple, yet highly effective weapons of mass deliciousness. The two Fleurie wines combine explosive floral perfume with pure fruited seduction in the mouth; in 2010 they are the equal of the very finest Côte D’Or village wines. The Brouilly is the ‘meaty’ cuvee; full of smoky raspberry fruits with an uplifting, inky minerality. And last but certainly not least, the Moulin-à-Vent is intense and regal, its sumptuous, aromatic fruit sporting a structured Côte D’Or frame. It is both seductive and profound and ten plus years will not weary it. Without doubt the benchmark of the range and one of the greatest wines of Beaujolias!
.
Not only do the Chermettes produce outstanding Beaujolais from the crus of Moulin à Vent, Brouilly and Fleurie, but they also make some of France’s most highly regarded Crème de Cassis from their own fruit which we offer below. If there is a finer cassis made anywhere in the world, we have not tasted it. And now Pierre-Marie is producing some Crémant Blanc de Blancs which, as expected, is absolutely superb (otherwise he would not do it)!

All about the fruit. Direct pressed to concrete to highly the fruit and nothing else. A lovely volcanic influence is present giving the fruit-heavy wine a gravely-wet stone backbone. A small portion of Moscato was also added to give the Rosato a bit more pep in its step.

From the producer: A light, bright and nimble Mediterranean wine, which transports you straight to Sicily, with gorgeous, sun-kissed fruit and nose heady with wildflowers. A roughly 50:50 blend of Frappato and Nero d’Avola, with a touch of Moscato. This year the Frappato is sourced from his youngest vines at home and blended with a Nero d’Avola from Pachino. It’s all given a direct press and aged in concrete for eight months. A little reduced on opening, this has a gorgeous tone, citrus in spades and a pleasant bitterness to finish. Summer in a glass. Bio certified by Q certificazioni

Azienda agricola Lamoresca” is a young, small agricultural farm in the heart of Sicily. We grow 1000 olive trees and 4 hectares of vineyard. We choose to let nature do its work in the field and in the cellar.

In the year 2000, we purchased our first piece of land, an olive grove with 46 very ancient olive trees of the local “Moresca”variety, after which we named our farm “Lamoresca”. Year after year, the farm growed and now we cultivate about 10 hectares of land, vineyard and olive grove, with the greatest respect for nature.
Lamoresca” is located in the hills, at an altitude of 430 metres above sealevel. The soil is of sandstone and clay. The climat is typical mediteranian : dry, very warm in the summer, very little rain.

The choosen variety of grapes are adapted to our soil and climate. We try to make a wine with a character of its own, without following fashion or trends. We make 3 red wines: “Lamoresca Rosso” is a blend of Nero d'Avola, Frappato and Grenache grapes, “Nerocapitano”, 100% Frappato, and "Mascalisi", a blend of Nerello Mascalese-grapes (70%) and Frappato. The white wine “Lamoresca Bianco”is made from Vermentino-grapes.

We pick the grapes, only when they are perfectly ripe. Fermentation takes place naturally, no yeast is added, in open barrels, temperature non-controlled.
We practice long maceration on the skin, for the red grapes, a little less for the white grapes. The aging continues in old wooden barrels and barrels of vitrified cement.
Our olive grove contains two varieties, typical of our area ; Moresca and Tonda Iblea. Our olives are hand picked and only the perfectly healthy ones are brought to the oil mill, where hygiene is of the highest standard. So we obtain an olive-oil extravergine, very fruity with delicate aromas and typically sicilian.

We work in the greatest respect for nature. Our products are artisanal and organic, bio-certified by Q Certificazioni.

We spend most of our time in the fields of the vinyard and olive grove, our true place of work. The weeds are managed mechanically and to nurture the soil we use cover crops, mostly local legumes. Only if necessary, sulfur based treatments are used against fungal diseases.

In the cellar we dedicate ourselves to showcasing the year's work between the rows of vines. The perfectly ripe grapes arrive in the cellar and are immediately destemmed. Fermentation occurs naturally, in open-top barrels; no yeast is added and the temperature is not controlled. For the red grapes we practice long maceration on the skins, while for the white grapes only a brief maceration is used. The aging continues in a combination of  cement tanks, plastic tanks  and old wooden barrels.

CLOS DU TUE BOEUF VIN ROUGE GAMAY 2020

LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE
SUPPLE RASPBERRY JUICY
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

Carbonically macerated Gamay - full force aromatics with a creamy-jubey punch. That being said, the Puzelat Brothers have also managed to coax out a herbal/henna note that gives this incredible Gamay a serious edge.

From the Distributor:100% Gamay. As for their entry-level white Vin Blanc, the Vin Rouge is made with sourced, organically farmed fruit from friends in the Cher Valley (the Puzelats' home turt in the Touraine). The bunches are kept whole and fermented spontaneously and carbonically with a short maceration and no sulfur. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and bottled with a maximum of 20 mg/l of SO2. In 2019, this is a gorgeous juicy fresh wine, showing lovely round black raspberry and blackberry fruit, supple, sapid and refreshing, really a perfect thirst-quenching Gamay. There is never enough of this beautiful wine to go around, so don't delay. As always the glass is hard to put down as it should be and is a benchmark of which there are now many imitators.

Isolated from other agriculture, the vines of Tue-Boeuf are part of a mosaic of hedges and forests which make up a balanced ecosystem. While some vines are 115 years-old, the majority of the parcels date from the renovation of the vineyards in the 1960’s by Jean and Solange Puzelat. The Puzelat brothers began working in their family Domaine in the early 1990s, and at the heart of the operation is the 10-hectare family estate—the Clos du Tue-Boeuf—in the Cheverny appellation. Two things define the Puzelat brothers' rare wines: the diversity of their cuvées, and their tenacious work with nearly-extinct grape varieties that were common in the Loire not so long ago, but were put aside by the AOC for reasons having more to do with commercial simplification than quality and terroir. The vineyards are tended on organic lines (their father never used chemicals), weed control being achieved by ploughing, and grass planted to provide further competition. The fruit is hand-harvested by a large and willing team, many of them part of the extended family - perhaps not that surprising when you consider that Thierry and Jean-Marie are just two out of seven children.

Dead vines are replaced by tip-layering adjacent vines, an ancient method which avoids the over-representation of clones in the vineyard; it has the advantage of being very cheap, but the disadvantage of creating a vine which is franc de pied, on its own roots, rather than on a phylloxera-resistant rootstock.

Once picked the grapes are transferred to the winery and are fermented with minimal intervention; the whites are pressed and the juice decanted off and transferred for fermentation into cask, where the wine remains on its lees until it is bottled straight from this vessel, without racking.

As for the reds, whole bunches are fermented in open-topped 40-hectolitre wooden vats beneath a blanket of carbon dioxide, with pressing by foot once fermentation is underway. The wine is then transferred into casks where, like the white wines, they remain until they are bottled without further racking.

For small-volume fermentation's Puzelat also has some 30-hectolitre fibreglass vats and some smaller vessels. The cellars are temperature controlled, although the vats themselves aren't; the environmental control might help a little in damping down the fermentation temperatures though. Sulphur use throughout is minimal, with most wines seeing no added sulphur except perhaps for a small dose at the time of bottling.

SPLICE TIGHT REFRESH
CLASSIC / 750ML

A perky Semillon from the Frodwich hill Vineyard. Partially fermented on solids to build texture balancing out the acidic force of the variety. A refreshing dry white wine that drinks like a zippy Splice ice cream.

From the Producer: 40yr old Semillon vines from the Fordwich Hill vineyard. Half was cold settled and fermented neutral and clean, half was fermented on full solids for mid palate texture. No adjustments made. Extended contact with fine lees to further build mid palate weight for early enjoyment. Bentonite stabilised. Coarse filtered and sulphured at bottling. The cool ripening period of V2021, and the resultant chemistry of the grapes at ripeness, meant that I really didn’t muck around with the Semillon.

Breaking Ground is the initiative of 3 rd generation grower/maker Ollie Margan (Ba. Viticulture & Oenology Adelaide University). Growing up around the inception of Margan Wines in 1997, viticulture was something he learnt from an early age. From the age of 15 he started working harvest in the winery and has now completed 17 vintages in total. The fruit for this range is sourced from distinctive parcels within the 110-hectare family holdings. The resultant wines are reflective of Ollie’s time spent at home on the family farm, but also experience gained from working in other regions such as Central Otago, Bordeaux and the Adelaide Hills. The Margan house style has always centred on showcasing the vineyard, eliciting a sense of place and speaking true of variety. The Breaking Ground range does not deviate from this mission statement. Where it perhaps differs, is in its pursuit for liveliness and spark. Slightly earlier picks, indigenous yeast and an earlier release, yield wines that favour approachability and refreshment over depth and complexity. Not to say these wines aren’t to be taken seriously, rather they present a slightly different approach in the winery; one of less control and dictation.

CRISP STOCKINGER GLOSS
CLASSIC / SUSTAINABLE / 750ML

A lean layered Chardonnay. A short period in a new Stockinger has rewarded the wine with a subtle reduction and toast. Crisp primary notes of crushed apple, pecan and citrus.

From the Producer: Fruit sourced from our Saxonvale vineyard, planted in the 70’s. Mostly I10V1 clone, which provides a particularly bright and lean fruit profile. As such, texture is built through indigenous ferment on light solids in a mixture of stainless steel, new Stockinger and seasoned French 500L oak puncheons. I sought to find balance between fresh lees reduction, crispness of primary fruit with a slight lift of wild ferment aldehyde. This tends towards the finer end of the Chardonnay spectrum with no malolactic fermentation. Unfined/unfiltered.

BLACKBERRY LIVELY EARTH
CLASSIC / SUSTAINABLE / 750ML

Made by 3rd generation grape grower, Ollie Margan. This is Ollie's first wine under the Breaking ground moniker. The wines offer a different insight into the Margan Families local clime and vines. The Barbera is a playful dark fruit-forward medium bodied red with a mellow earthy edge. Scrumptious.

From the Producer:The young vines from our 1998 established Ceres Hill vineyard. Comprised of the earlier picks from
the vineyard with the inclusion of whole bunch clusters, which acts to bind and soften the naturally high acidity. Indigenous ferment, no rectification, pressed off after partial ferment. Rested in a combination of stainless steel and old French oak.

The Nebbiolo was fermented on skins for 90 days - allowing the wine to form long-chain tannins, giving structure without face-melting grip. Highly perfumed with great length and evolution for such a light and delicate drop.

From the Producer: The focus is to always produce wines that are honest, interesting and with soul. We believe a lo-fi approach to both our winemaking and viticultural practices enables us to achieve this goal.

In 2019 we picked up the keys to our new home in Kyneton, the old timber yard of the Turner Bros. Hardware precinct in the centre of town. A gorgeous place steeped in history that blurs the lines between urban winery, cellar door, neighbourhood wine bar and beer garden.

We scrambled together enough equipment and barrels and produced all our 2019 wines here - free to express and experiment, there’s some exciting wines coming through now.

We also now look after several vineyards from where our fruit comes from, all within an hours drive from the winery.

LA VIOLETTA YEYE ROUGE 2020

GREAT SOUTHERN, WEST AUSTRALIA
JUICE SPICE BERRY
CLASSIC / 750ML

Awash with every red coloured fruit you can think of. Light, bright and playful. Drink anywhere, anytime with anything.

From the Distributor: YeYe Rouge (Pinot Noir, Syrah + Tempranillo) Low yielding clonal Pinot Noir from Denmark makes up the heart of the blend, bringing lifted red fruits, musk and herbal notes, with Syrah contributing spice and structure. Plenty of stalks, whole berries and carbonic in here, all wild fermented, then pressed to oak to complete malolactic fermentation. The Syrah comes from an ironstone gravelly loam site west of Mt Barker; mid-weight, juicy, spicy. A splash of Meunier brings dark-fruited aromatics and a different angle on the palate. Six months in oak and early to bottle keeps the style where I like it - bright, layered, juicy, with some savoury scratch. Unfined. Sulphur dioxide added just before bottling.

From the Producer: La Violetta began producing small quantities of wine at Denmark, on Western Australia’s south coast, in 2008. Grapes are sourced from a handful of trusted growers with exceptional vineyards, some amongst the oldest in the state. The idea is to keep production at a small scale so that each wine is crafted with care.

Before being lured west by the quality of Great Southern grapes, winemaker Andrew Hoadley worked all over Australia’s cool and hot zones and in Piedmont, Abruzzo and Washington State. He now lives on Mt Shadforth, just out of Denmark town, and makes the wines in a small facility in the countryside.

The name ‘La Violetta’ derives from an old Piedmontese song celebrating intoxication.

TORO, SPAIN
SOFT CONCRETE CRANBERRY
CLASSIC /750ML

Fresh bright Tempranillo, lively fruit solidified with softened tannins and polished with the aid of large concrete and wooden vats. A playful yet serious drop.

From the Distributor: Glac̩ cherry and dark fruit tea, with touches of smoky brush, pepperminty and whole-of-orchard balsalm and florals. There's husky spice, with the powerful silt-clay soils of Toro are in clear evidence underneath. All lovely and exuberant, but the real point with this wine is just how delicate and pared back it is compared to the Toro norm. Unwooded (aged in concrete and old wood vats) it's not fruity, not raw, not heavy, just a beautifully moderated fruit riot organised on glorious, gravelly, grip-and-release fruit tannins. Simple and special, with spread and reach, never sweet, heavy nor lumpy.

RILEY HARRISON CABERNET FRANC 2020

MCLAREN VALE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
PEPPERS BRIGHT SPRING
LEFT OF CENTRE / 750ML

Beach wine - light, bright, chillable and easy going. Bright tamarillo, subtle green pepper and a whole lot of sunshine.

Cabernet Franc from a vineyard conveniently located quite close to the Victory Hotel. These vines are cooled by the sea breeze & fuelled by the summer sunshine. 10% carbonic maceration and 90% straight up and down. Bright red fruits, fresh-cut chilli and the kiss of a man splitting firewood. This is spring luncheon wine if ever it did exist.

Harrison Wines defy convention - the convention and constraint of a nine-five job led Riley Harrison to seek a creative outlet, and in 2015, with a humble tonne of Grenache, this vision became a bottled reality.

In pursuit of perfume, texture, and drinkability, Riley crossed regional boundaries to secure small parcels of fruit from vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley.

With an emphasis firmly on fruit quality and varietal expression, Riley’s winemaking style weaves between the lines of conventional and minimal-intervention.

“Minimal intervention winemaking can be divisive and can focus too much on the minimalist process, rather than the outcome of the final wine. Strangely, doing less requires far greater attention to detail in the winery. It's the complex interaction of science, creativity and environment in a bid to generate flavour that I find intoxicating"

The resulting creatively charged wines are the outlet Riley was searching for. Harrison Wines has been an exploratory journey into the world of aromatic excitement and textural pleasure.

He won’t be returning to the nine-five anytime soon.

PICARDY CHARDONNAY 2019

PICARDY CHARDONNAY 2019

PEMBERTON, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
BALANCE TEXTURE TIME
CLASSIC / 750ML

A beautiful balance Chardonnay. The wines complexity is built both in the winery and the vineyard. Multiple clones have been planted and the cropping levels are modestly maintained. Complexity building cellar practices include varying press practices, a broad oak regime and carefully monitored primary and secondary fermentation. All these factors aid in emphasising the unique style of Picardy and its local clime.

From the Producer: Picardy Chardonnay is made from equal portions of the four preferred clones 76, 95, 96 and 277(selected by the University of Dijon) to achieve complexity. Excellent fruit intensity, structure, pH to acid relationship and fine-grained tannins guarantee long life and excellent bottle development. The wines are also very approachable in their early years. The Chardonnay vines carry a maximum of 7 tonnes per hectare, excess fruit being hand-crop thinned at veraison. In order to achieve low yields the vineyard is non-irrigated and cane pruned. Picking time for the Chardonnay is usually around early March. The fruit is ripened to approximately 12° baume, but this is not recipe winemaking and fruit flavour ultimately determines picking dates. The fruit is then handpicked and transported to the winery (only 200 metres away) on the Picardy estate.

In the winery approximately 40% of the Chardonnay is whole bunch pressed and the remainder is destemmed and then pressed. The juice is settled for 48 hours before being racked and the fermentation is then commenced in tank using two different yeast strains to give fruit complexity and texture. Shortly thereafter the wine is racked to a blend of new to four year old French oak barriques to complete fermentation.

While in oak the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. During this period they are lees stirred once per week. Each barrel is checked and topped up weekly.  After about 10 months in oak the wine is racked out of barrel to tank and then given a gentle filtration on its way to bottle.

Established in 1993 in the Pemberton region of Western Australia. Picardy is owned and operated by Bill, Sandra, and Dan Pannell. Bill and Sandra were pioneers of the Margaret River region, establishing Moss Wood vineyard and winery in 1969. Moss Wood went on to be a driving force in establishing Margaret River as one of Australia's important growing regions. Picardy strives to continue this tradition of wine making quality and excellence.

NASCIRI MASCERATO GRECO BIANCO 2019

CALABRIA, ITALY
FRICTION SUN ORANGE
LEFT OF CENTRE / 750

An intriguing short macerated orange wine made from Greco in Calabria. The wine has subtle grippy friction with orange blossom, stone fruit and a lovely 'wet earth' aroma. A gateway orange wine.

From the Producer: We have some 7 hectares of vineyards in open countryside that are always exposed to the sun and have a fantastic view of the sea.

The vineyards grow four different vines of which three have red grapes: Aglianico, Greco Nero and Nero Calabrese; and one has white grapes: Greco Bianco. All of the grapes are either typical of the local area, for example Greco Bianco and Greco Nero, or of the south of Italy.

As we do for the production of oil, we also follow the whole production cycle of our wine, from looking after the vines to harvesting the grapes (yes, the grapes all come from our land) and transforming the grapes into wine, and finally the bottling and labelling processes. We have our own wine cellar where we carry out all the necessary checks.

We won’t tire of repeating that the result of our wine depends solely and 100% on our grapes and our processing of them. We don’t add any preservatives or other substances that could adulterate it. Neither do we do anything to enhance the colour or the consistency of the product artificially.

Calabria is a region that has very different microclimates (such as sea and mountains) a short distance apart and this is typical of the area and very interesting to experience. Another thing is that we have sun almost all year round, which gives us a mild climate with winters that are not too cold. Thanks to this fact our countryside is nearly always green (except in August because the intense heat gives little opportunity for the vegetation to flourish) and there are often flowers even in winter.

MINIM SHAYS FLAT GRENACHE 2020

PYRENEES, VICTORIA
LAYERED FORWARD BERRY
EDGY CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

The Shay's flat is a surging fruit-forward Grenache. The wine deserves a good splash to soften it up and showcase the breadth of what is under the bonnet. Restrained oak has allowed tart berries and an array of other red-fruited classics to shine through.

From the Producer: From the Certified Organic Shay’s Flat vineyard farmed by M.Chapoutier in the Pyrenees, I’m deliriously happy to be working with Grenache again and to wrap my head around a new region! Old, deep Cambrian-Ordovician sandstones and shales through the valley, long weathered and friable with rolling steep hills surrounding the valley. It's a great spot and has a long history with grape farming. Picked for balance, the fruit came in with big ripe red fruit flavours and plenty of natural acids. Often to get that depth of flavour with Grenache it comes with a sacrifice of acid, but here the fruit is farmed well and in the right spot. We handpicked deep into March and esteemed all but 25% of the fruit, fermenting both bunch and berry in one big pot which was wrapped and gassed early to encourage carbonic maceration. Cracking the pot open after 3 days we worked the fruit a little with occasional pump-overs to pull some colour and tannin, with the ferment pressed after 3 weeks total maceration. Moved to seasoned puncheons and barriques for a 10-month rest then bottled in late January of 2021 with a small sulphur addition.

GISBORNE, NEW ZEALAND
JUNIPER EARTH MANUKA
CLASSIC / ORGANIC BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

A unique Pinot Noir grown on the banks of the Te Arai River. A heavier style, flowing down a savoury path. Aromas of undergrowth, manuka flower and juniper.

From the Producer: A bright fruited, expressive nose, with notes of dark cherry, juniper berry and an intriguing hint of fennel and manuka flower. There is a savoury taste with firm tannins and ripe fruit finishing with a lively mineral edge to balance. Unfined. Unfiltered. Enjoy, with friends, lamb and other fine grilled pieces.

In 1984 James and Annie Millton established The Millton Vineyard on the banks of the Te Arai River near
Manutuke, where the early settlers first planted grapevines in 1871. This region is situated on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand in the wine appellation of Gisborne.

Originally Annie’s father, Mr John Clark, had developed vineyards on his estate at ‘Opou’ in Manutuke during the late 1960's. James and Annie returned to Gisborne after experience gained in the famous wine regions of France and Germany including Champagne Bollinger, Maison Sichel in Bordeaux and Weingut Kurstner in Rheinhessen. By 1983 they had extensively researched and replanted major parts of the families’ grape growing business, before establishing The Millton Vineyard in 1984.

A broad mouth filing white wine, tinned pineapple and a subtle grip.

from the Producer: My wine usually (luckily) has the energy and spirit of a young person: you like it so much that you’re ready to forgive all its naivety and sometimes childish behaviour. I thought that as I got older, I’d switch to 20-yo wines that make me all wise and philosophical. Alas, it didn’t happen - I still love that zingy, untamed youthful charm. And I wanted to share it with others. Hence the Youngster range - a Polaroid photograph of how the wine looks in our autumn cellar, in the barrel just after it has finished fermentation

WATERMELON RAW CHEWY
LEFT OF CENTRE / ORGANIC / 750ML

An intriguing broad rose made from Pinot noir, Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch. Watermelon, ripe strawberry and a savoury bitterness that gets you prepped for the next sip.

From the distributor: Rose (direct press)- Pinot Noir, Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt. The grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed. The juice ferments in 2000-liter stainless steel tanks. The wine ferments for about 2 months, with occasional pigeage and indigenous yeast fermentation. Elevage takes place in the same tanks for about 2 months. The wine is bottled unfiltered, unfined, and with zero sulfur added.

Milan’s father planted  8 hectares of vines in 2001 across two wine-growing municipalities: Moravský Žižkov and Velké Bílovice. No herbicides are used and the vines are worked organically and biodynamically. He believes that gentle methods of growing grapevines and grape processing give the best result. All wines in the cellar are fermented spontaneously and they are usually vinified in oak and acacia barrels.

LA VRILLE + LE PAPILLON LA TRIBU GRENACHE 2019

ARDECHE, FRANCE
CHERRY SPICE CASSIS
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

Grenache fermented for 6 days on skins. Aged on Lees in inert vessels before being sent to bottle without Sulphur. Fruit forward with bright cherries, cassis and henna. Unfiltered, unfined - raw.

From the Distributor: The region of Ardeche lies on the cusp between Northern and Southern Rhone. On the western bank of the river, up in the hills, is an affordable and dynamic wine area where an increasing number of young wine growers work with the same varieties as its well known neighbour. La Vrille et le Papillon (the tendril and the butterfly) is located in Valvigneres, the epi-centre of the Ardèche natural wine scene.

Meryl Croizier’s connection to vines and agriculture in Ardeche runs deep, his grandparents were vignerons and farmers. At the age of 18 Meryl spent vintage working with Gerald and Jocelyne Oustric at Domaine du Mazel, ecological producers for over 20 years, also located in Valvigneres. These brothers have been instrumental in the growth and nurturing of new winemakers in the area, renting vines to Sylvain Bock and Andrea Calek at the beginning of their wine paths. Meryl subsequently completed formal studies of Agriculture in Dijon and Oneology in Montpellier.

In 2012 Meryl and Geraldine, with three young children in tow, returned to the family vineyards to commence their own project. It was time to settle having spent many years travelling with Meryl working from the Macon through to the Madiran in the south west.

They have 5 hectares of vines comprised of Syrah, Merlot, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Ugni Blanc, planted on clay limestone soils with lots of pebbley rocks. They converted the handful of small plots that were not already farmed as such to organics, eschewing herbicides and pesticides. Since 2014 they have introduced tisanes and biodynamic practices also.

For their first two harvests, 2012 and 2013, Meryl and Geraldine made their wine in cellars belonging to friends. By 2014 their own cellar was complete and Le Vrille et la Papillon’s home was established. Vinification is done with wild yeasts only, the wines do not go through fining or filtration.

These wines have purity, vibrancy and freshness along with structure and acidity. They offer exceptional value as well as drinking pleasure.

PEPPER SWATHE BLUE
CLASSIC / 750ML

A blend of fruit from multiple Southern Rhone Vineyards.  An elegant wine that speaks of both old and new world practices. Broad blue fruited profile with a welcoming peppery edge.

From the Producer: Les Graviers is a negociant blend of Syrah from three sources in the Rhone Valley. The majority comes from the southern parts of the Drôme and Ardèche regions, and a smaller amount from vineyards around Tournon.  Three sources: 40% Ardeche Sud Saint-Martin d’Ardeche, 40% Drome Provencal, 20% Rhone Septentrional.

Cave Julien Cécillon was founded in 2011 and is the beloved project of winemakers Julien Cécillon and Nancy Kerschen. With vineyards in the appellations of Saint Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage in France’s Northern Rhone Valley, the estate is dedicated to producing elegant, terroir-driven wines.

American Nancy Kerschen, and Julien Cécillon, a native of Tournon-sur-Rhône and nephew of Jean Louis Grippat, met through an enduring fascination with both wine and international travel. In 2011, having combined experiences working for various international wineries (Yves Cuilleron, Christophe Curtat, Fabrice Gripa, JC Cellars, Clos du Val, Saintsbury, Indevin and Saronsberg) the two decided to embark on their own winemaking endeavour.  Cave Julien Cécillon is the product of that union.

Respecting the unique environment of each appellation, the estate applies sustainable grape-growing techniques in the vineyard to achieve the best expression of terroir in every bottle. Based on their collective experiences, they blend modern techniques with old world traditions and growing methods to achieve well-structured, graceful, food-friendly wines.

FRANKLAND ESTATE ALTER WEG RIESLING 2020

FRANKLAND RIVER, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
GUN TANGERINE CRYSTALLINE
LEFT OF CENTRE / NO SO2 / 750ML

Large format oak + no adds + fruit from one of Australia's best Riesling producers = Alter Weg. A long slow prerss cycle has given a tea-like quality that is sharpened with gun barrel flint and tactile minerality. Voluminous mouth feel with sip indusing acidity.

From the Producer: No additions of any kind are used in the making of Alter Weg Riesling. All riesling grapes are harvested as cool as possible and pressed immediately, slow press cycles allow for soft and long extraction of juice.

Picking decisions are made on ripeness and fruitfulness, with the main aim of working with natural balance yet seeking greater ripeness. A cloudy juice is run to a combination of 1000ltr and 500ltr barrels.

Alter Weg translates to the “old way” describing our approach to this riesling. Ripe balanced riesling fruit is harvested and gently pressed to large format barrel where it undergoes wild yeast fermentation. A further 10 months of aging on full lees in barrel result in a superbly textured riesling with approachability and generosity of fruit supported by the creamy textural element of this vibrant riesling.

Lightly golden colour supports the slightly riper tone and more oxidative approach to juice. Tangerine notes and a seductive saline morishness support the delicate aroma of spice and the juicy ripe citrus tones.

Mineral yet juicy palate, initially a very slight reduction aroma of gun smoke/ironstone gives way to the fruitfulness and volume of this wine as it opens up. Saline and crystalline notes give freshness and brightness which is followed by a soft textural line that gives the  wine a fullness and completeness. The tension of this wine masterfully balances the fruitful yet savoury palate with a deliciousness and mouth-watering finish from the fine well-rounded acidity.

The barrel maturation gives the wine a notable roundness and fullness whilst in keeping with the fine line achieved by our organic rieslings at Frankland Estate. A complex balanced Riesling that will gain further complexity with age

ENVINATE ALBAHRA GRENACHE 2019

ALBACETE, SPAIN
SAVOURY SEA CRUNCH
CLASSIC / 750ML

Pretty unadulterated Grenache from the mainland. Aged in old oak and concrete, Envinate has pursued pure fruit rather than making wine in the cellar. The wine has a crunchy edge with bright rhubarb and saltbush.

From the Distributor: Envinate's Albahra comes from a remote and unique place and from rare varietals, with this 2019, the latest release the best yet. Made in the Almansa region close to the town of Albacete near Castilla-La Mancha, influenced by the near by Mediterranean Sea

Envinate, which literally translates as “wine yourself,” is the project of four passionate young winemakers: Roberto Santana, Jose Martinez, Laura Ramos and Alfonso Torrente. The four met while studying oenology in Alicante in 2005 and formed a collective based on a shared philosophy of wine and a desire to explore the ancient, Atlantic influenced terroirs of western Spain.

In 2008, the group bought their first vineyard in Ribera Sacra, then took control of vineyards on the north of Tenerife and then ba single patch of Tinta Amarela in Extremadura. Finally, in 2012, they began working a site in Almansa,  planted with Garnacha Tintorera. In each place, the team care for old abandoned vineyards and move frequently around the country.

The Envinate group pride themselves on their work in the vines: a collective of viticulturalists, rather than travelling winemakers. The core of Envinate is a shared philosophy around four critical aspects of their wine:
1. The personality of the site
2. The character of the vintage
3. The soul of the people who work among the vines
4. Not fucking around in the winery because that’s how you make coke.

In the winery, concrete or old oak barrels are used for fermentation and ageing. Sulphur is used only at bottling in minuscule proportions. The labels all acknowledge the vineyards owners, the village and often the soil type.

It’s easy to focus on the passionate and diligent people behind Envinate, but that would be to miss the point of what they do: more than anything else, Envinate is an attempt to express a place and a time through wine.

BRIMMING TOAST CURRANT
CLASSIC / 750ML

A polished Cabernet Blend that is light on its feet and fruit forward. 18 months in old oak has given the wines a nostaglic spiced edge. Soft, textured and orderly acid - great wine!

From the Producer: Made from the Steels Creek Vineyard and grown by Simon Peirce, this vineyard was planted in 1981 and produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc . The blend is 84% Cab Sav and 16% Cab Franc with 20% whole bunches included in the ferment. Its fermented with wild yeast and had 18 months in old French oak barriques.

This variety is one that the Valley used to be widely recognised for and I’ve been wanting to bring it to life for some time. The resulting wine is brimming with bright black currant and blackberry fruits with hints of spice and toast. The palate has soft, textured berry fruits with very gentle tannins and light bright acidity… is certainly isn’t the tannic and oaky beast that Cabernet is often known for. Fantastic winter drinking!

DAPPLED APPELLATION CHARDONNAY 2020

YARRA VALLEY, VICTORIA
BRULEE LINE CITRUS
CLASSIC / 750ML

A lively acid-washed Chardonnay that has lees presence, but not weight. The grapes are hand harvest and whole bunch pressed, leading to a gentle flinty nutty edge with a tidy array of white petals and citrus.

A blend of upper and lower Yarra Vineyards - Clones P58, I10V1 and Dijon clones 76 and 95 - from three vineyards in Steels Creek, Seville and Macclesfield. All fruit is hand-picked and cooled overnight, followed by whole bunches being lightly crushed by foot before a long pressing when the un-sulphured juice is transferred straight to oak. The oak is a combination of 80% old and 20% new French Barriques, Puncheons and Demi-Muids. Ferments are allowed to start naturally (wild) and complete with no temperature control. The wine is not battonaged and left on lees for 10 months where some MLF may have occurred, but not encouraged, and SO2 is added when the wine is ready for it. The wine is lightly filtered before being bottled un-fined.

This 2020 rendition is closer to my 2017 than anything else in the past, maybe even slightly more generous. The season produced a beautifully fragrant wine with white flowers and citrus aromas with complex grilled hazelnuts, mille-feuille and hints of flint and smoke. The palate is precise and textured with white stone fruit flavours and citrus mineral line. While absolutely delicious now, as I have seen with the 2017’s this wine will blossom with time and patience.

PETALS GENEROUS EXPRESSIVE
CLASSIC / MOUNTAIN WINE / 750ML

Located 300masl, the Nebbiolo is trellised to form large pergolas that skirt the undulating landscape. A vibrant fruit-forward wine offering ripe cherries and a moreish wet stone minerality laced throughout the mid palate.

From the Producer: The Barmet is a young and fresh wine that recalls the genuineness and a little bit of the hardness of our territory. It takes its name from the small natural cellars (Barmet) obtained under the rocks located among the vineyards, fresh refreshment to hard work. A wine for the whole meal, it is an excellent match for cured meats, chestnut and bean soups, cabbage and ajucche soups.

In Donnas, Nebbiolo has always been cultivated, a vine for great reds for aging and of which we have news since 1200, cultivated in the Alba area, in the Langhe, in the Novarese area (with the name of Spanna), in the Valtellina (with the Chiavennasca appellation) and in the Lower Aosta Valley and Canavese (with the Picotendro or Picotener appellation). It requires a long pruning that is well suited to our pergolas; the most widely used rootstock is 420 A. Environmental factors (climate, soil, etc.) have influenced the characterization of the Nebbioli in the different areas, so much so that they recognize different biotypes in the CVT 423, CVT 415 and CVT 308 clones of our areas

GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA
SAVOURY NUANCE CRANBERRY
CLASSIC / 750ML

A.R.C is based on a small balanced farm in Gippsland. While their recently planted vineyard matures they're sourcing fruit from carefully selected and managed vineyards in Victoria. The Tilly is a Pinot Noir grown in Dromana. It is a bright Pinot Noir offering notes of fresh cranberries, campari and simmered rhubarb.

From the Producer: Pinot Noir from Dromana in the Mornington Peninsula. Made predominantly from the Champagne clone our 2020 vintage brings the classic notes of cranberry and the sea together with spice and nuances of oak. Our last “Tilly” Pinot holds a special place in our hearts. Drinking well from now until 2030.

A.R.C or A Random Collection was founded in 2017 after musings and dreams from a previous life working restaurant floors. The vision of working the land, being in touch with nature and living within our means came to life a few years ago after we made the leap from our lives in Sydney and ended up with our very own permaculture farm in West Gippsland Victoria.

As A.R.C started we sourced our fruit from a selection of vineyards predominantly in the nearby Mornington Peninsula allowing us to learn our craft, experiment and further establish our vision for the brand. We firmly believe in ethical farming practices and in early 2020 we were thrilled to be presented with an opportunity to lease 3ha of established biodynamic vines just outside the town of Warragul. This amazing site is perched between the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and Mount Baw Baw to the north. Its rich red volcanic soils produce wines of elegance, poise and character. We are delighted to see A.R.C evolve as we continue to understand and learn from this magical site. Our work in the cellar is hands off, preferring not to manipulate the wines and rather let them express their fruit and journey. All wines are wild ferment, not filtered or fined and vegan friendly.

SAVOURY BALANCED LAYERED
CLASSIC / 750ML

A small family operation based in one of the smallest appellations in France, Coteaux du Quercy. A red blend revolving around ripe Cabernet. Elegantly structured with a plush wedge of Merlot that makes it oh so approachable. Also, the wine is made by one of the nicest families in Europe.

From the Producer: Located just 20 minutes from Cahors, the estate has been run by generations of Gisbert vignerons since 1778, focused on making wine to be shared amongst good company (and preferably over long lunches). The vineyard is nestled between fields of sunflowers and fruit trees, with vines wrapping around the church of Saint Etienne- its bell tower keeping watch over the grapes.

Making the best wine possible from sustainable vinification methods is primary for our family, sticking to tried and tested processes from generations past, in order to create balanced and elegant Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Côt blends, as well as delicious Cabernet Franc and Rosé. Camille and son Roger knew they were on the right track as the land was cultivated for vines, finding multiple reminders of the Roman ambitions to also make wine on the site. The remnants of amphora, and of course the mosaics, continue to serve as a reminder of simple, yet effective, winemaking.

CALYX WINE NEB NOIR 2019

PYRENEES + SUNBURY, VICTORIA
FRUIT TANNIN WARMTH
CLASSIC / 750ML

Fruit sourced from the Lakey Farm in Sunbury and the Malakoff vineyard in the Pyrenees. Equal parts destemmed Nebbiolo and whole bunch Pinot Noir. Cofermented and left on skins for three months before heading to oak. Vibrant acid, floral with a late grip. No filtration or fining and minimal S02. Fruit forward, tannin warmth.

From the producer: Calyx wine is produced and letterpress printed by Yuri Zinenko in a small shed surrounded by an acre of vines in Keilor, Melbourne. Everything is done on site, by hand with help from friends and family. Since 2019 I've been printing my labels on a Chandler and Price letterpress. I currently use 170gsm Awagami bamboo paper stock which I mount onto a double sided adhesive. It is then cut down on an ideal guillotine to get press ready. I hand feed and use a rubber-based ink to make the impression. Finally, I die cut the labels to shape and stick them on the bottles. Similar to my wine making it is a constant work in progress. I'm pumped to learn more and hopefully create some exciting new gear and labels in the future. Feel free to get in contact if you want any more info x. Also a huge thank you to Dan at seagull press for sharing your 50 years of printing knowledge.

SORRENBERG SAUVIGNON BLANC 2019

BEECHWORTH VICTORIA
TACTILE FLINT MELON
CLASSIC / ORGANIC BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

Sorrenberg has championed the balance of texture and aromatics in their iconic Sauv/Sem blend. To achieve this balance, the Sauvignon blanc is left on skins for a handful of hours before being pressed to ferment in predominantly larger format oak. It is also aged on lees to further build complexity and texture. In the glass expect green pears, flint, lees weight and moreish acidity.

From the producer: This wine comprises of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. Most of the Sauvignon Blanc fruit had 8 hours skin contact prior to pressing. The Semillon component is crushed and pressed immediately after picking. This wine was 100% barrel fermented with predominantly larger barrels used. All went through natural yeast fermentation. The extended lees contact helps fill out the middle palate and gives this wine the extra dimension it is known for. The nose of the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon is showing a combination of Meyer lemon, grapefruit and a hint of kiwifruit and green pear. These fruits follow on to the palate with a freshness combined with refined acid creating a minerally, well-rounded finish. Cellaring potential 8 years.

RAINOLDI ALPI RETICHE NEBBIOLO 2019

LOMBARDY, ITALY
MOUNTAIN STRAWBERRY FINE
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

A beautifully classic Nebbiolo from a mountainous Organic vineyard in Valtellina. Aged in large Slovenian oak, the wine is able to remain honest offering Mountain herbs, red fruits, tobacco and wet stone.

From The Distributor: Rainoldi is a fourth-generation family wine business that was founded amid a climate of poverty and emigration in 1920s Valtellina. The current owners, Aldo and Michela Rainoldi, practice organic, non-interventionist farming and age their wines in traditional large Slavonian oak. Their wines are honest, pure and of the highest order - easily producing some of the finest suites of Nebbiolo in the world.

‘Alpi Retiche’ is a smashing entry level while the humble Rosso showcases Valtellina, walking a line between smokey, savoury alpine herbs and a core of delicious little red fruits. Their Inferno Superiore showcases the rocky appellation with ripeness, tobacco and wet stone minerality. The sublime Sassella Superiore Riserva is a pinnacle of the region, spending two years in cask and one in bottle before release. It is elegantly intense and loaded with strawberry, baking spice and violet.

Valtellina is a unique territory, rich in history, culture and biodiversity. It is located in the far north of Italy, in Lombardy, in a special climatic position. It is considered the most important mountain vine-growing region in Italy, the third in Europe. It is the second-largest Nebbiolo producing region in the world.

The mountains are said to put their signature on the wines of Valtellina and, not surprisingly, the Nebbiolo grapes from this valley express the rocks and mountain. For this reason, it is unique, special, elegant, contemporary, but at the same time, beyond time and timeless. In Valtellina, the vineyards hang from the mountains, suspended on spectacular terraces made of dry-stone walls. They are nestled in the woods, able to capture and store the heat of the sun. A sort of Mediterranean scrub in the heart of the Alps, where cacti, agaves and olive trees grow. This biodiversity typical of Valtellina transmits a “Valtellina style” to the grapes and wines, a style projected into the future, designed with the values of sustainability, respectful of nature and the environment.

NADIR CUNAEZ 5 JOURS PINOT NOIR ROSE

VALLE D'AOSTA ITALY
ZIPPY MOUNTAIN FRESH
ROSE / ORGANIC / 12.5%

Pinot Noir fermented on skins for 5 days in the awe worthy mountains of Aosta. A fleshed out rosato offering savoury herbs and trademark Pinot aromatics. A quenching drink.

From the producer: The vinification is traditional with a spontaneous fermentation and a maceration of 5 days on the skins. The wine then ages for 8 months in steel tanks. During the maturation, some decanting is carried out. The wine is bottled without clarification or filtration and rests in the bottle for at least 4 months. Our small winery is located in Gressan, on the outskirts of Aosta.

Founded in 2009, the winery rests its foundations on the family's agricultural business, managed first by my grandfather then by my father and precisely until 2009 aimed essentially at self-consumption.With a few thousand bottles produced, we apply an agriculture that respects the environment and the ecosystem as much as possible, so the rows do not know the use of herbicides or pesticides, but are treated exclusively with copper and sulfur, on average for four or five times per season. In the cellar, the philosophy is aligned with the choices made in the vineyard: the use of sulphites is reduced to a minimum, the winemaking does not require the use of additional chemical agents.

Fermentations are spontaneous or at most aided by a self-produced pied de cuve. We do not carry out clarifications or filtrations. Our goal is to return the Terrior Valdostano and the peculiarities of each of our single vineyards to the glass. We pay great attention to maintaining biodiversity, which is why many of our vineyards are over 50 years old and some are even centenarians. Behind our project there is a scrupulous work of research and field tests. Our wines want to be natural in substance. The vines we grow are: Petit rouge, Vien de nus, Fumin and Vuillermin the autochthonous ones; Pinot noir, Moscato, and Gewurztraminer the internationals. Our bottles are the fruit of unconditional love and passion for our land and our origins.

BEL AIR LES GRANITS BLEUS GAMAY 2019

BEL AIR LES GRANITS BLEUS GAMAY 2019

BEAUJOLAIS FRANCE
BRIGHT CRUNCH GAMAY
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 13% ALC / 750ML

The Domaine is situated on the lofty slopes of Bel Air, overlooking the capital of Beaujolais, Beaujeu. Since 2009 their vineyards have been organically tended. The ‘Granits Bleus’ is an excellent example of the serious side of gamay. A coil of carbonic driven red fruits backed up by weathered rock and a welcoming tannic chew.

Domaine de Bel-Air has a deeply rooted history in Beaujolais dating back almost 180 years. Somewhat poetically, the original estate house of the Domaine is perched on the hill of Bel-Air overlooking the town of Beaujeu, capital of the Beaujolais region. But despite this long history, the destiny of the Domaine dramatically changed in 1986 when Jean-Marc Lafont, current owner with his wife Annick, took over the estate. Jean-Marc immediately took a different approach. In 1989, the vineyards started to be grown without chemicals and since 2009 they have been grown organically. To have his vineyard’s soil develop a biodiversity is a vision Jean-Marc cherishes. This biodiversity is essential to elaborate distinctive wines, which are synonymous with the location at which they are produced. Under the watch of Jean-Marc, the Domaine’s holding has been consolidated to 23 hectares in total.Jean-Marc’s father worked at Domaine de Bel-Air and Jean-Marc grew up running around the vineyard and helping out where possible. He has strong memories of his childhood at Domaine de Bel-Air and still remembers the different aromas floating around in the winery from that time.  It is that love affair and a deep connection that drove him to buy the Domaine and work as hard as possible to bring it to where it is today. You can identify that positive energy in his wines. Today, the Domaine has exceptionally old vineyards located in Beaujolais’ prime locations within the appellations of Morgon, Brouilly, Fleurie, Régnié and Moulin à Vent. Jean-Marc’s experience coupled with his natural curiosity, provide him with a profound understanding of his native region. Jean-Marc has seen the region evolve from the mass production of inexpensive wines to more terroir* driven wines of extreme finesse. What’s more, he has always led the charge to improve the quality of the wines by experimenting with new methods in order to enhance the limitless resources of the Beaujolais soils. From blue or rose granite to clay, manganese or schist, the variation of soils on the hills of the different Beaujolais villages brings fantastic diversity. The wines from Morgon, Brouilly and Fleurie are generous with vibrant red and black fruits, floral notes and spice. The colour oscillates from deep red to black and shows you how intense these wines are. An intensity that is very seductive and driven. The Moulin à Vent on the other end is more structured, spicy with some hints of violet and truffle when aged a bit. There are two special cuvées produced from two of the best vineyards of the Domaine with an average age of 80 years old that undergo oak maturation for 12 to 15 months. These two cuvées, Brouilly “Gorge de Loup” and Moulin à Vent “Granit et Manganèse” are examples of the capacity of certain Beaujolais vineyards to perform like a 1er or Grand Cru from Burgundy, its northern neighbour. These two cuvées can age for more than 15 years and be incredibly complex and impressive.

HEYMANN LOWENSTEIN RIESLING 2018

HEYMANN LOWENSTEIN RIESLING 2018

MOSEL, GERMANY
ACID LINE PERFUME
CLASSIC / 750ML

The steep slated Lowenstein vineyards are handpicked and whole bunch pressed. A great example of thoughtful Mosel Riesling. Quenching with high floral notes, flint lines and tactful residual sugar. Stunning.

From the Distributor: The Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling bottling comes from declassified grapes from the family's Schieferterrassen vineyards - essentially the premier-cru sites of Hamm and Brückstück. These are very steep slate sites that are organically farmed. The grapes are very gently pressed as whole bunches before indigenous-yeast fermentation (around 30% in old casks, 70% stainless steel) before a long period of lees contact and relatively late bottling.

While unfettered pleasure is the reflex response elicited by classic Mosel Riesling, the often overt power and disorienting range of Heymann-Löwenstein tends to be more thought-provoking. Reinhard Löwenstein views his craft as a creative interplay between climate, soil, vine and grower, culminating in wines that are singular, authentic and complex. The wines he makes with daughter Sarah never fall short on that count, and the 2012s are the most complete we’ve seen.

The descriptor trocken is banned from his vocabulary and anybody foolish enough (not me!) to enquire about levels of residual sugar is duly and properly chastised. He probably considers the alcohol content another irrelevant detail in the greater scheme of things, but the law is an ass and requires that information to be given. What matters to Löwenstein is terroir, and tasting his wines from different plots within the same vineyard, his credo is convincing. Michael Schmidt, jancisrobinson.com
