4 KILOS VINICOLA CALLET 2018

MALLORCA SPAIN
QUINCE POMEGRANATE TEA
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

The most distinctive wines in the world are made by passionate growers who work with varieties suited to their patch of land. Callet is one of these varieties, symbiotic with the ferrous rock, picturesque countryside and the salty sea breeze that is the island of Mallorca. 4 Kilos Vinicola is one of these producers making one of our favourite examples of this unique variety. The wine is delicate with a notable savoury salinity. There is muchas textural quince, pomegranate and a black tea grip. It is a wine for food or the fireplace. Seriously delicious.

From the distributor: A kilo is old Spanish slang for a million pesetas (in today's money, about 6000 euros. Project owners Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero, started the business by chipping in 2 kilos each - 4 kilos. Mallorca yields definitively Mediterranean wines - it's warm, but fresh and its climate is surprisingly conducive to good wine, and 4 Kilos is clearly the leader in quality and style. Mallorca is home to two discrete appellations: DO Binissalem Mallorca in the North-West and DO Pla i Llevant in the South-East of the island, and 4 Kilos make wines from both regions. Located in the triangle between Sardinia, Tunisia and Barcelona, Mallorca yields definitively Mediterranean wines. Warm, but fresh, the climate is surprisingly conducive to good wine. There are some unremarkable local white varieties - Prensal blanc and others, and a bit of Chardonnay too, but the Callet and Manto Negro red wines are what count. Of several decent wines made nowadays on Mallorca, 4 Kilos is clearly the leader in quality and style.

AGRAPART 7 CRUS BRUT CHAMPAGNE NV

AGRAPART 7 CRUS BRUT CHAMPAGNE NV

AVIZE CHAMPAGNE FRANCE
CHAMOMILE COILED EXCITING
CLASSIC / BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

Agrapart composes their champagne from 70 vineyards across 7 villages; Avize, Cramant, Oger, Oiry, Avenay Val d’Or, Bergères-les-Vertus and Mardeuil. The ‘7 crus’ is a combination from all 7 villages, it is a blend of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir. The 7 crus, goes through full malolactic fermentation and spends 3 years on lees. A stunning example of a richer grower champagne.

From the distributor: The Agrapart range begins with a non-vintage Blanc de Blancs called Les 7 Crus, referring to the seven Côte des Blancs villages from which it is sourced; Avize (younger vines, 20-40 years), Cramant, Oger, Oiry, Avenay Val d'Or, Bergères-les-Vertus and Mardeuil. Crafted from estate-owned vineyards, Les 7 Crus is typically blended from two different years, with half of the older vintage raised in neutral 600 oak casks. This release is a blend of 2013 and 2012. 90% Chardonnay 10% Pinot Noir; full malolactic fermentation; aged 3 years on lees; 7g/l dosage."A blend of Chardonnay with a touch of Pinot Noir, is vibrant and lively, with fresh notes of apple and citrus. It's an outstanding non-vintage brut, showing an uncommon complexity and finesse, and it finishes with long aromas and an elegant minerality." Peter Liem, champagneguide.net".The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru 7 Crus is a lovely, introductory-level Champagne from Agrapart. Bright and focused, but also with more than enough mid-palate richness to be accessible upon release, the 7 Crus is super-expressive today. The inclusion of 10% Pinot Noir a few years back has changed the 7 Crus in a meaningful way in making the wine more accessible in its youth. The creamy, spiced finish is hugely appealing, but there is a lot to like here, including the wine's overall balance." 91 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com

ALESSANDRO E GIAN NATALE FANTINO CASCINA DARDI BUSSIA BAROLO NEBBIOLO 2013

BAROLO, ITALY
VELVET PRIME PETAL
CLASSIC / 75OML

The Cascina Bussia is left on skins for a month before being aged in old Slavonian oak for 4 years. A very delicate Barolo, coming of age. The wine in still bursting with primary petals, but an earthy undertone is definitely edging forward. 2013 was a solid year in Barolo leading to distinct regional typicity.

Information sourced from Kermit + Lynch Wine Merchants

From Two brothers, Alessandro and Gian Natale Fantino, run this family estate in Monforte d’Alba. Alessandro managed the vineyards and served as the enologist at Cantina Bartolo Mascarello for 20 years, from 1978 to 1997. Since 1998, he has dedicated himself to running his family estate alongside his brother full-time.

The brother's farm eight hectares in the heart of the historic Bussia cru north of Monforte, one of Barolo’s most famous areas for producing wines of great longevity and finesse. The Fantino holdings are concentrated exclusively in the “Dardi” section of Bussia, a hillside with perfect southern and southeastern exposure in the geographic centre of Bussia. This gives them their “Cascina Dardi” brand name on the label of their Barbera and Baroli (for those already familiar with these wines, they were formerly labelled as Vigna dei Dardi, before the brothers registered the Cascina Dardi trademark).

Barolos from Bussia tend to have deep colour and rich fruit and while they don’t lack the classic tannic structure of Nebbiolo from this part of the world, they are not nearly as hard as the Barolos from the southside of Monforte or from Serralunga. This fact does not preclude the Fantino Baroli from aging but makes them delightfully approachable relatively young. The Fantinos are also blessed with some of the oldest vines in the entire Barolo zone, thanks to the fastidious care given to them by Alessandro and Gian Natale. Planted in 1946 and 1947 and pruned in an old style that is very labour intensive, they produce grapes that would be the envy of any Barolista.

The Fantino brothers produce an amazing Barbera d’Alba from these ancient vines in Dardi, and a “Rosso dei Dardi” from younger vine Nebbiolo planted on a west-facing slope. The Barbera is loaded with lush fruit and smooth, silky texture, and a ravishing perfume. The Rosso is playful, fruit-driven, fresh, and aromatic. They are also specialists with several traditional Piemontese wines that are mostly disappearing: Nebbiolo Passito and Barolo Chinato.

ALESSANDRO VIOLA NERO D'AVOLA ROSÉ 2020

SICILY ITALY
QUENCHING WATERMELON OREGANO
LEFT OF CENTRE / NO SO2 / ORGANIC / 750ML

How satisfying the fragrant, refreshing and mineral wines are from Alessandro Viola. Following in his fathers footsteps, these are wines full of character. They have a simple rusticity with refreshing clean edge acidity. The rosé is made from 100% Nero d'Avola from some of his younger vines grown in clay and sandy soils 250 meters in elevation. The wines are wild fermented and aged in steel tank for 6 months before bottling. No so2 is added. The wines are bright and taste like crunchy watermelon juice, seed and all, seasoned with white pepper and wild Sicilian mountain herbs. How good.

From the distributor: Alessandro Viola father’s was a vine grower although other than a few bottles of homemade wine he never saw the fruit of his hard work in the vineyard into bottle. Alessandro was fascinated in grape growing from an early age and after a few vintages of self-teaching he decided to get a formal education and study oenology. During his university studies he steered away from the mechanical side of winemaking he was being taught and decided to study the science. The idea that nothing needed to be added or taken away from the wine if the grapes, soil and winemaking were all working together became his mantra. After his university degree he worked in the north of Italy and then for a larger winemaker on Mt Etna, however he had never forgotten the wines he had made before, without anything added and made by hand. So he started making wine for himself, first with a friend Uva Tantum, and now alone using his name Alessandro Viola. He cultivates 7 hectares of organically managed vines worked strictly by hand. The vineyards are located in 2 areas, the first in Pietra Rinosa close to Alcamo in the north-western tip of Sicily, the soil is made of clay and the vineyards sit at 200m above sea level taking a large influence from the ocean. The second vineyards in Fastuchera are higher at 400 meters; the soil is calcareous producing more minerals driven and finer wines. He is strictly committed to growing and championing local varieties. Catarratto, Grillo, Nero D’avola and Nerello Mascalesse make up his repertoire. We are delighted to be bringing Alessandro’s hand made wines to Australia. His style is unique and his commitment to organic practices and no additions is something to behold.

HUNTER VALLEY NSW
OILY LEMONADE BUTTER
CLASSIC / 750ML

To us, Semillon speaks of hot summer cricket games, prawns on the bbq and classic Aussie films like The Castle and Where the Green Ants Dream. It has an unmistakable place in Australia's wine industry and continues to shine as a wine versatile for a number of foods, settings and of course the potential of ageing. This 2014 Semillon made by one of our favourite producers of this variety is in such a good spot right now. With plenty of life in it yet, there is a complexity of lemon balm and yellow flowers with semillon's unmistakable nervy acidity. With a rich pork roast, bitter horta and/or a platter of oysters, you'll be as mad for it as we are.

From the producer: Having previously spent 13 years learning and applying his craft at Tyrrell’s, owner and winemaker Andrew Thomas has over three decades of experience winemaking in the Hunter Valley. It’s the no compromise, attention to detail approach to his winemaking that has seen him named 2014 Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year (having previously won the award in 2008), as well as contributing to an impressive mantlepiece of wine show trophies, medals, and enviable critical acclaim. The Braemore vineyard, planted in 1969, is situated on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin. Once an ancient sea floor, Braemore consistently produces Semillon featuring freshness, vibrancy and remarkable longevity. The deep, sandy loam soils are free draining allowing deep root penetration, perfect for Semillon. The vineyard producing wine that has achieved an enviable reputation in recent years as being one of the finest examples of classic Hunter Valley Semillon.

GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA
SAVOURY NUANCE CRANBERRY
CLASSIC / 750ML

A.R.C is based on a small balanced farm in Gippsland. While their recently planted vineyard matures they're sourcing fruit from carefully selected and managed vineyards in Victoria. The Tilly is a Pinot Noir grown in Dromana. It is a bright Pinot Noir offering notes of fresh cranberries, campari and simmered rhubarb.

From the Producer: Pinot Noir from Dromana in the Mornington Peninsula. Made predominantly from the Champagne clone our 2020 vintage brings the classic notes of cranberry and the sea together with spice and nuances of oak. Our last “Tilly” Pinot holds a special place in our hearts. Drinking well from now until 2030.

A.R.C or A Random Collection was founded in 2017 after musings and dreams from a previous life working restaurant floors. The vision of working the land, being in touch with nature and living within our means came to life a few years ago after we made the leap from our lives in Sydney and ended up with our very own permaculture farm in West Gippsland Victoria.

As A.R.C started we sourced our fruit from a selection of vineyards predominantly in the nearby Mornington Peninsula allowing us to learn our craft, experiment and further establish our vision for the brand. We firmly believe in ethical farming practices and in early 2020 we were thrilled to be presented with an opportunity to lease 3ha of established biodynamic vines just outside the town of Warragul. This amazing site is perched between the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and Mount Baw Baw to the north. Its rich red volcanic soils produce wines of elegance, poise and character. We are delighted to see A.R.C evolve as we continue to understand and learn from this magical site. Our work in the cellar is hands off, preferring not to manipulate the wines and rather let them express their fruit and journey. All wines are wild ferment, not filtered or fined and vegan friendly.

AXEL PRUFER LES TEMPS DES CERISES LES LENDEMAINS QUI CHANTENT GRENACHE 2017

LANGUEDOC, FRANCE
HERBAL ELEGANT RAW
LEFT OF CENTRE / PRACTICE ORGANIC / 750ML

Forest wine, an isolated vineyard surrounded by rugged forest. Axel Prufer encourages biodiversity as a way of working with nature to produce the most delicious grapes. His wines are raw and incredibly expressive. 100% Grenache, soft tannins surrounded by mountain herbs and red berries.

From the Producer: Les Lendemains qui Chantent is a beautiful and quite restrained wine (in the sense that it is elegant rather than exuberant) made from 100% Grenache from vines that are at least 35 years old. The vineyard itself is situated at 450 metres above sea level in the forests of the rugged Parc Naturel Regional du Haut-Languedoc which lies inland from the city of Beziers.

It exhibits very soft tannins and lovely herbal and flower aromas. There is a distinct minerality associated with this wine derived from the decaying granite and quartz soils.

It is Axel’s leading cuvée, but he only releases it in years where the crop is exceptional! And this year it is certainly exceptional. This is a stunning wine of great elegance and charm which may benefit by being poured into a carafe just before drinking.

Axel Prüfer was born and raised in East Germany but moved to France as a young man to take up a career in wine making. He produces delicious wines naturally with as little intervention as possible – many of his wines have no added sulphur.

In fact, on a visit to his winery we tried one of his cuvees which had been bottled without sulphur and one that had been bottled with minimal amounts of sulphur and the result was simply amazing. The one without sulphur stood head and shoulders above the other for freshness, vitality and flavour.

He has been described as a ‘darling of the natural wine bar movement’. He is a quiet, thoughtful and engaging young winemaker who is totally committed to producing non-interventionist wines.

We visited him in the mountains behind Beziers and were fascinated by the lengths he goes to in ensuring that his grapes are healthy and his wines are pure. Every sentence he utters is the result of deep thought.

We discussed the problems of grapes grown in monocultures such as in Chablis and Champagne and then crammed into his small truck to bump our way up hillsides through thick forest and then for the final part of the way by foot until we reached his remote vineyard surrounded by forest. There is absolutely no chance of spray-drift here!

Because the forests are the natural habitat of wild boars, Axel collects human hair from the hairdressers in the local village and spreads it around the boundary of his vineyard. He says that the boar pick up the human scent from the hair and avoid the vineyard. The vineyard is a picture of health with spiderwebs everywhere and an amazing biodiversity on display.

All this is for nothing of course if the wine doesn’t taste delicious. Axel only uses natural yeast to ferment his wines and he adds no sulphur at all (we put a ‘Contains Sulphites’ warning on the label because some sulphites can be naturally produced during the wine making process). This gives them a liveliness that is most appealing.

He uses tanks made from stainless steel or fibreglass or large, old barrels that impart no oak flavour. The tanks have ‘floating’ lids so that no air can get at the wine if he does not have enough to fill a tank.

BAPTISTE BERTRAND PLEINE TETE BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU GAMAY 2019

UNDERGROWTH VIBRANT HAWBERRY
LEFT OF CENTRE / ORGANIC / 750ML

A robust example of Gamay. The fruit wasn't solely carbonically macerated so a darker edge is present. Undergrowth with salivating astringency gives a serious edge to this vibrant Gamay.

Sourced from Paris Wine Company: Pleine Tête is a shockingly simple and delicious Gamay from humble Beaujolais-Villages vineyards, situated in the shadow of the Mont Brouilly. Vinified in the semi-carbonic, vin nature style, this wine is a subversive wink to the vino-industrial complex that still dominates the Beaujolais. Baptiste designed his own label, inspired by the street artist Banksy's famous mural of a revolutionary preparing to hurl a bouquet of flowers, but of course in the Beaujolais, one must be ready to fight with Gamay.

It says Baptiste Bertrand on the label, but everyone calls him Bart. Located in Beaujolais, Baptiste farms 4.5 hectares of vines on clay-limestone soils around Charentay, a small commune that makes up part of a swath of Beaujolais-Villages vineyards between Mont Brouilly to the south and Morgon to the north. Baptiste originally studied ecology, with a specialization in environmental management and cartography. After working for organizations and nonprofits for a decade around France, he found himself back home in Beaujolais, where he spent three years managing a local project related to local vineyards. When that project came to an end, a friend suggested that he takes over some vines from a retiring winemaker.

Baptiste is the first producer in Charentay to be certified organic, and his wines are produced using simple traditional equipment and minimal intervention. The winery is housed in a large, century-old winemaking complex that a friend had purchased to renovate into several apartments, then offered to let Baptiste use the existing press room and cellar for its original purpose. Baptiste uses a small vintage wooden basket press for the crush, then all wines are fermented in large concrete tanks. Nothing is added except occasional doses of sulfur when needed. Most of the wine is aged in concrete, though a small portion goes into used barrels. In 2020, Baptiste began experimenting with fiberglass eggs.

BARRACO GRILLO 2019

SICILY, ITALY
SALINITY TIGHT NUTTY
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

A lively Grillo, offering maritime salinity and freshness. A few days on skins and then aged in concrete has given the wine a subtle grip without masking the melon heavy nose.

From the distributor: From an isolated plot of fifty year old bush vines handed down to him by his father. These are planted over red sand and terra rossa, just a kilometre from the sea. The wine spends two days on the skins before a fermentation in steel and ten months of élevage in concrete vats. This is as old-school as they come, a compact and powerful wine, with a distinctively nutty, saline character.

Nino took over his family’s vineyards in 2004 and from the outset he has worked organically, focussing on the native grapes of his Western Sicily and single vineyard wines, hoping to show others the potential he sees in the region he calls home.

His remote vineyards are spread out up and down the coast and Nino works as hard as any grower we have met, constantly driving his beat up Fiat through the sand dunes to check on his plants. In the cantina his aim is simply to guide the wine from vineyard to glass.

BEL AIR LES GRANITS BLEUS GAMAY 2019

BEAUJOLAIS FRANCE
BRIGHT CRUNCH GAMAY
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 13% ALC / 750ML

The Domaine is situated on the lofty slopes of Bel Air, overlooking the capital of Beaujolais, Beaujeu. Since 2009 their vineyards have been organically tended. The ‘Granits Bleus’ is an excellent example of the serious side of gamay. A coil of carbonic driven red fruits backed up by weathered rock and a welcoming tannic chew.

Domaine de Bel-Air has a deeply rooted history in Beaujolais dating back almost 180 years. Somewhat poetically, the original estate house of the Domaine is perched on the hill of Bel-Air overlooking the town of Beaujeu, capital of the Beaujolais region. But despite this long history, the destiny of the Domaine dramatically changed in 1986 when Jean-Marc Lafont, current owner with his wife Annick, took over the estate. Jean-Marc immediately took a different approach. In 1989, the vineyards started to be grown without chemicals and since 2009 they have been grown organically. To have his vineyard’s soil develop a biodiversity is a vision Jean-Marc cherishes. This biodiversity is essential to elaborate distinctive wines, which are synonymous with the location at which they are produced. Under the watch of Jean-Marc, the Domaine’s holding has been consolidated to 23 hectares in total.Jean-Marc’s father worked at Domaine de Bel-Air and Jean-Marc grew up running around the vineyard and helping out where possible. He has strong memories of his childhood at Domaine de Bel-Air and still remembers the different aromas floating around in the winery from that time.  It is that love affair and a deep connection that drove him to buy the Domaine and work as hard as possible to bring it to where it is today. You can identify that positive energy in his wines. Today, the Domaine has exceptionally old vineyards located in Beaujolais’ prime locations within the appellations of Morgon, Brouilly, Fleurie, Régnié and Moulin à Vent. Jean-Marc’s experience coupled with his natural curiosity, provide him with a profound understanding of his native region. Jean-Marc has seen the region evolve from the mass production of inexpensive wines to more terroir* driven wines of extreme finesse. What’s more, he has always led the charge to improve the quality of the wines by experimenting with new methods in order to enhance the limitless resources of the Beaujolais soils. From blue or rose granite to clay, manganese or schist, the variation of soils on the hills of the different Beaujolais villages brings fantastic diversity. The wines from Morgon, Brouilly and Fleurie are generous with vibrant red and black fruits, floral notes and spice. The colour oscillates from deep red to black and shows you how intense these wines are. An intensity that is very seductive and driven. The Moulin à Vent on the other end is more structured, spicy with some hints of violet and truffle when aged a bit. There are two special cuvées produced from two of the best vineyards of the Domaine with an average age of 80 years old that undergo oak maturation for 12 to 15 months. These two cuvées, Brouilly “Gorge de Loup” and Moulin à Vent “Granit et Manganèse” are examples of the capacity of certain Beaujolais vineyards to perform like a 1er or Grand Cru from Burgundy, its northern neighbour. These two cuvées can age for more than 15 years and be incredibly complex and impressive.

Belargus is making Chenin Blanc in a way I've never tasted before. It has a complexity I have only seen in Burgundy and an aromatic profile that I've never encounter. Flinty reduction with saw-like acidity, stone fruit, underripe melon and creme fraiche.

From the Distributor: The Loire Valley, also known as ‘the King’s Garden’, has been growing grapes for centuries. Domaine Belargus is set upon on many-thousand-year-old terroirs from Savennières, Quarts-de-Chaume and the Layon Valley.
Domaine Belargus is an Organic operation and has recently begun implementing biodynamic practices. These principles are being applied at Belargus by two pioneers of the region: Jo Pithon, who has advocated for organic farming for more than 30 years, and Guy Bossard (Domaine de l’Ecu in Muscadet), who has pioneered Biodynamic practices in the region for decades. This dream team is putting in every effort to rejuvenate some of France’s greatest vineyards.

Historically, the Anjou wine region has mostly grown Chenin Blanc and was once known for producing wines for royalty across Europe from the 11th to 19th century. The Chenin Blanc variety may now be less known than Chardonnay, but its incredible attributes place it in the same class. The variety is suited to the stunning geological complexity of the region like no other. Formed 500 million years ago and renowned for its schisteous soils, Anjou Noir is also home to purple, black and layered schists, pudding sandstone, magmatic rocks, rolled pebbles, fine clays and aeolian sands. The combination of variety and earth is unrivalled.

BEST'S YOUNG VINES PINOT MEUNIER 2020

GREAT WESTERN VICTORIA
FORWARD CHIRPY CANDID
CLASSIC / 750ML / 12.5%

Best's have done an amazing job at putting Pinot Meunier on the map. Meunier has notoriously thin skins, with low pigment (anthocyanins) - the combination of these two characteristics lead to a light bright wine honing into a primary fruit profile. The young vines Meunier hovers on the edge of the rose-red wine spectrum.

From the producer: Generally used in sparkling wine production, Pinot Meunier is rarely made as a straight table red wine. However, at Best’s, we have been producing small quantities of single varietal red wines from Pinot Meunier since the 1960s, with the vineyards and wines gaining cult-like status (and loyal followers) along the way. Although eminently drinkable now, previous examples of this wine prove that it will age gracefully for many years to come.  Try this, if you can, in 5-10 years time.

A gentle, dry style of prosecco to fill in conversation and keep the tempo up. Slightly richer than most, pear and nectar.

From the producer: The fruit was machine harvested, gently pressed and only the free run component of juice was utilised in this product.  The juice was cold settled and racked before inoculation with selected yeast.  Once fermented the base wine was racked and sulphured immediately to retain freshness.  The wine was then stabilised and filtered prior to bottling. Abundant fresh fruit of honeydew and a hint of green apple. Slightly more dryer in style but with an abundance of fruit sweetness balanced with gentle acidity makes this prosecco highly drinkable!

CLASSIC / 750ML

An impeccable vineyard, maintained by the owner-operator, Michael Dhillon. Organic practices are implemented but the vineyard isn't certified. The Pinot Noir is fully destemmed and gently fermented in small open-top vats. Bright fruit, balanced acid, a gentle seasoning of oak and a touch of blue suede shoes.

From the Producer: The Bindi Dixon Pinot Noir is based upon declassified grapes from the Original Vineyard planted in 1988 and grapes from the new Block K, planted in 2001. The idea of this wine is to produce a delicious, perfumed, spicy harmonious, textured wine that is not as intense, complex nor age worthy as our individual vineyard wines. Even when the outstanding Block K vines are older we will continue to declassify sections or barrels from each vineyard and produce this wine.

The wine is fermented the same way as our other Pinot Noirs in that it is ostensibly 100% de-stemmed and gently worked in small open vats. The wine spends 11 months in French barrels, of which about 10-15% is new.

‘Bindi’, 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges, is the family property of the Dhillon family. Originally purchased in the 1950s as part of the larger grazing farm ‘Bundaleer’, ‘Bindi’ is a 170 hectare farm of which 7 hectares are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fifteen hectares are dedicated to managed plantation eucalypts for high grade furniture timber whilst the remainder of the land is maintained as remnant bush land and important indigenous grasslands.

The Bindi vineyard is the fundamental focus of our endeavors. Our vineyard and winemaking philosophy is to seek balance and purity in the expression of our various individual vineyard sites and this philosophy is applied to farming and conservation at ‘Bindi’; the preservation of the natural harmony.

Vineyard elevation 500 meters above sea level. Soils predominantly shattered quartz over siltstone, sandstone and clay (Ordovician period sub soils-480 million years old) with some eroded volcanic top soil over clay (Approximately four millions years old). Generally infertile.

Typical hand management regimes of fastidious small vineyard philosophies are maintained encompassing hand pruning, frequent passes (at least ten passes each vine) though the growing season managing the vertical shoot positioned canopy and hand harvesting

Since 2005 we have been implementing organic procedures and inputs where the focus is on promoting soil life and balance leading to excellent vine health. This involves compost, undervine cultivation and aerating the soil (opening up the soil for air, moisture and soil applications).

A playful wine made from the grape variety, Pais. Originally, Pais was primarily used to make rose however, in Chile it is often made into a table red. The wine is light and pretty with a gentle grip. Springtime classic.

From the producer: Our País Viejo, just as its name suggests, comes from vines that are more than 100 years old, found on our Mingre estate in the dry-farmed secano interior of the Maule Valley, planted on very old granitic soils originating from the Coastal Mountains and with a presence of quartz and other minerals.

GARNET PURE FINE
CLASSIC / BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

A tiny producer based in the Roero Hills. The producer Renato Vezza sharpened his palette as a globe-trotting Somm before taking over the family farm. His wines are delicate and pure with glossy tannins surrounded by rose water, licorice and a touch of leather.

Sourced from the Republica: In France they call them "vin de garage" because they are produced in tiny cellars and in tiny quantities. They are often oenological masterpieces. As in the case of the Bricco Ernesto Red Wine which are born in the Roero hills, Priocca. The wines don't have a DOC or DOCG certification by choice of Renato Vezza the producer (Ernesto was the grandfather). Vezza was a sommelier in London in Marc Pierre White's restaurant, then in Canada and Australia. Back in Priocca he took over the family business, certified biodynamic, which had been producing grapes for 4 generations. But they had been sold, until Renato started making them. Di Rosso, (a wine that rivals Barolo), is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, only 1000 bottles are produced annually.

BY FARR SHIRAZ 2019

MOORABOOL, VICTORIA
SPICE LENGTH ELEGANCE
CLASSIC / 750ML

Shiraz grown on north-facing red volcanic soils, co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier for 19 days before being aged in oak for 18 months. The cool climate shiraz is fruit-forward with a lovely ripe stem spice and silty tannin profile.

From the Producer: Shiraz fruit comes from the original By Farr vineyard, planted in 1994. It lies on a north-facing slope, and the red volcanic soil has a base of limestone with deep-set sandstone. All fruit is hand-picked from the VSP trellising, with 20 per cent left as whole bunches in the fermentation. Most years we co-ferment between 2 and 4 per cent viognier with the shiraz, the date determining whether or not the former is co-fermented and bled back. It is a natural fermentation, with the fruit remaining in the tank for 19 days before pressing. Shiraz sees 18 months in French oak, 20 per cent being new, and is bottled under vacuum.

A powerful nose, with the depth and complexity of cool-climate shiraz. This wine is spiced with pepper and mineral elements, leaning towards earthy. The co-fermented viognier adds a little richness to both the bouquet and palate, which has a very pleasant sweetness to start, followed by intense fruit and earthy long tannins to complete the delicate structure and overall elegance of the wine.

The microclimate of the Moorabool Valley is influenced by winds from the western plains and bracing sea breezes, which regulate the temperature on long, sunny days and cool the air overnight. This climate is key to producing naturally balanced, low-yield fruit that is rich in flavour.

The region’s environment is both cool and harsh for viticulture, due to the low rainfall and ever-prevailing winds that sweep across the barren western plains of Victoria. On average we receive 240mm of the 540mm annual rainfall in the growing season. The variation of temperatures between night and day helps us achieve complex and long-palate structures in our wines. Farming our land is not easy, but we believe the best wines are born from the most challenging environments.

Our vineyards are based on ancient river deposits within the Moorabool Valley. Thousands of years later, we are reaping the rewards of these complex and mineral-rich soils, which lend their unique characteristics to our grapes.

There are six different soils spread across the Farr property, with the two main types being rich, friable red and black volcanic loam, and limestone, which dominates the loam in some areas. The other soils are quartz gravel through a red volcanic soil, ironstone (called buckshot) in grey sandy loam with a heavy clay base, sandstone base, and volcanic lava rock. The soil’s good drainage and low fertility are crucial in ensuring small yields of intensely flavoured fruit.

The soil structure and microclimate at our vineyard make it ideal for growing pinot noir and chardonnay, and our location rates among the world’s best for both varieties.

RICH PLUM STRUTURE
CLASSIC / BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

Sangiovese left on skins for 50 days, before being aged for 42 months in large format Slavonian Oak. The resulting wine is rich and deeply complex. A saline edge is present that folds through the sun-soaked fruit profile.

From the Producer: Ten long years passed between planting our vineyard and releasing the first bottles of this wine. We think of Brunello as a paean to Montalcino, a synthesis of everything that makes this part of the world so special; its unique combination of soils, sea breezes and woodlands. These elements find their expression in our Brunello; sun-baked saline notes, meaty aromas, heady Mediterranean herbs and fresh minerality. It is a wine that requires time and patience. We have learned to take care of it during its aging period, coaxing youthful characteristics to full maturity and nursing the potential for complexity. In present times, where everything is based on the concept of right here, right now, this is an old-fashioned wine. It is made exclusively from the estate Cru, Vigna del Bosco. Our first vintage of Brunello was 2004.

The vineyards are all located in the Poggio San Polo area in the south-eastern part of Montalcino, along the hills that slope down from Il Greppo towards Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The altitude varies between 420-450 metres above sea level. Some elements characterize this land: the woodlands that surround the vineyards the mighty Monte Amiata behind us, with its dual function as both protective barrier from the weather and thermal regulator the sea breezes that come in from south east and meet winds from north and north east the many hours of sunlight a huge variety of soil (clay, galestro or crumbly marl, lime, quartzite and so on) that defies easy definitions but augments the complexity of the wines abundant water that saves us from the negative effects of drought in dryer vintages.

The vineyards are 4.2 Ha (10.37 acres) divided into two parcels; “Bosco” and “Strada.” The “Strada” vineyard is made up of four smaller areas: Vigna della Strada, Vigna del Lupo, Vigna dell’Alberello and Vigna della Quercia. The only grape varietal planted in all of our Montalcino vineyards is Sangiovese. All vineyard operations are manual, based on the observation of the phases of the moon and the biodynamic calendar. We combat vine diseases using Sulphur and Copper, combined with natural anti-mildew treatments that rely on propolis and herbal infusions from various plants including yarrow, chamomile, equisetum, nettle and willow.

CATHERINE BERNARD LE CARIGNAN 2017

LANGUEDOC, FRANCE
GENTLE EARTHY INTEGRATED
CLASSIC / ORGANIC BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

The Carignan is sourced from two sites, ranging from 50-100 years old. The wine was macerated for a week with 50% whole bunch and the rest destemmed. The wine undulates from peppery-earthy notes to reduced tart berries.

From the producer: Catherine Bernard was a journalist with Libération Newspaper, first in Paris and then Montpellier. But in 2003, turning 40, newly divorced and with two young children, she needed a change of direction.

Originally from Brittany, Catherine grew up on a farm, her father was a grain dealer, and she wanted to be back in touch with the land. She obtained her certificate in agriculture, specialising in viticulture and oenology and began searching for a small vineyard, initially around Corbières where her friend Maxime Magnon was located. But it was to be the commune of Saint Drézéry, Languedoc that Catherine settled, purchasing 3 hectares of land in 2005, 1 hectare under vine to Grenache and Mourvedre.

In 2006 during her first harvest, she was to discover part of what was sold to her as Grenache on the bill of sale, was in part actually Marselan, a hybrid grape of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon created in the 1960’s. An unforeseen challenge that Catherine embraced. This original parcel is what makes the cuvee, La Carbonelle.

Over the years she has purchased more land and now has 4 hectares of vineyards, with the addition of Cinsault, Alicante Bouchet and Terre Bourret under vine. The soils are a composition of limestone and clay with large pebbles, the vineyards are all certified organic and farmed in a biodynamic spirit.

In the early stages she vinified each harvest in friends’ wineries, until 2015 when she completed the building of her small 'chai'. It is a thoughtfully laid out building with cellar work done by gravity, its design inspired by the work of Australian architect, Glenn Murcutt.

One visit, Catherine explained to me that for her, Languedoc is ‘the forest of France, the land of Freedom. There is a tradition of vines in the region, but not of wine, allowing the freedom to make wine in a very personal way.’

Her production is small with 16,000 to 20,000 bottles per annum. Much of her wine stays in France and her largest export market is Japan, an early adopter. For 13 years, Catherine has worked alone, doing all the vineyard and cellar work herself. In 2018 she was joined by her son Nicolas.

A woman of character and strength, it is impossible not to be inspired by Catherine. Her deft hand and feminine touch produce wines of incredible elegance.

PETALS GENEROUS EXPRESSIVE
CLASSIC / MOUNTAIN WINE / 750ML

Located 300masl, the Nebbiolo is trellised to form large pergolas that skirt the undulating landscape. A vibrant fruit-forward wine offering ripe cherries and a moreish wet stone minerality laced throughout the mid palate.

From the Producer: The Barmet is a young and fresh wine that recalls the genuineness and a little bit of the hardness of our territory. It takes its name from the small natural cellars (Barmet) obtained under the rocks located among the vineyards, fresh refreshment to hard work. A wine for the whole meal, it is an excellent match for cured meats, chestnut and bean soups, cabbage and ajucche soups.

In Donnas, Nebbiolo has always been cultivated, a vine for great reds for aging and of which we have news since 1200, cultivated in the Alba area, in the Langhe, in the Novarese area (with the name of Spanna), in the Valtellina (with the Chiavennasca appellation) and in the Lower Aosta Valley and Canavese (with the Picotendro or Picotener appellation). It requires a long pruning that is well suited to our pergolas; the most widely used rootstock is 420 A. Environmental factors (climate, soil, etc.) have influenced the characterization of the Nebbioli in the different areas, so much so that they recognize different biotypes in the CVT 423, CVT 415 and CVT 308 clones of our areas

SAVOURY BALANCED LAYERED
CLASSIC / 750ML

A small family operation based in one of the smallest appellations in France, Coteaux du Quercy. A red blend revolving around ripe Cabernet. Elegantly structured with a plush wedge of Merlot that makes it oh so approachable. Also, the wine is made by one of the nicest families in Europe.

From the Producer: Located just 20 minutes from Cahors, the estate has been run by generations of Gisbert vignerons since 1778, focused on making wine to be shared amongst good company (and preferably over long lunches). The vineyard is nestled between fields of sunflowers and fruit trees, with vines wrapping around the church of Saint Etienne- its bell tower keeping watch over the grapes.

Making the best wine possible from sustainable vinification methods is primary for our family, sticking to tried and tested processes from generations past, in order to create balanced and elegant Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Côt blends, as well as delicious Cabernet Franc and Rosé. Camille and son Roger knew they were on the right track as the land was cultivated for vines, finding multiple reminders of the Roman ambitions to also make wine on the site. The remnants of amphora, and of course the mosaics, continue to serve as a reminder of simple, yet effective, winemaking.

FRESH PEPPER BRAMBLE
LEFT OF CENTRE / ORGANIC / 750ML

The Organic grape grower Thibault Charnay has finally made his first wine and it's a cracker. Sourced from his own small vineyard based in Anse. The vineyard is trellised on golden limestone that gives the wine a briny edge. In the glass, it is peppery, with red-berried compote, bramble tartness and chalky tannins.

From the Distributor After creating and running his own construction company for nearly a decade, Thibault Charnay returned to the family Domaine in 2012 to work in the vineyards around his hometown. He purchased a few additional hectares of vines, and today, he farms 12 hectares of Gamay on the classic Pierres dorées (golden limestone) around Anse in the southern part of the Beaujolais.

For many years, thanks to his ready access to tractors and other machinery, Thibault helped his wife Emilie’s family carry out the organic treatments in their vineyards. Inspired and nudged by his brother in law Raphael at Domaine Saint Cyr, Thibault decided to convert his own Domaine to organic farming in 2019, as well as vinify and bottle his own production (rather than sell it off to the négociants).

CLOS DE GAMOT CAHOR MALBEC 2016

CAHOR, FRANCE
WEIGHT TOBACCO SKILLFUL
CLASSIC / ORGANIC PRACTICES / 750ML

Malbec at its best. A weighty red that warms the cockles and is fit for a fireplace. Oak balanced, with notes of tobacco, prune and a whiff of tar. The Clos De Gamot has unbelievable aging potential, time will only make this wine better.

From the Producer: The philosophy of the Jouffreau family is simple: be good farmers. give things time, observe nature, be respectful. This approach has seen vines ageing back to 1885 still producing intense, great fruit. The vineyard is located on the second and third of the Lot river's terraces, composed of pebbles, gravel, and quartz mixed with alluvium of the Lot. With no use of herbicide, the workload on the vineyard is enormous. From a winemaking perspective, grapes are sorted when they join the cellar. Each plot is vinified separately, with gentle pumping over to keep a harmonious structure. Wine is aged for 18 to 24 months in old oak pungent with some 40 years old foudre (70hl and 100hl).

Jean Jouffreau’s daughters and his son-in-law Yves Hermann have continued to lovingly care for the family vines, with Yves' son now joining the legacy. The tradition continues, with the focus on bottle maturation remaining. “A wine, like a person,” says Yves, “should have a personal story to tell over time.” With the range of vintages the estate offers, it is possible for consumers to affordably capture history in a glass. We’ll drink to that!

Clos de Gamot is vibrant. Violet notes lead, with pure and fresh dark fruits, and approachable crunchy tannins. Skillful use of oak rounds out the package, with a long, persistent finish.

LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE
SUPPLE RASPBERRY JUICY
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

Carbonically macerated Gamay - full force aromatics with a creamy-jubey punch. That being said, the Puzelat Brothers have also managed to coax out a herbal/henna note that gives this incredible Gamay a serious edge.

From the Distributor:100% Gamay. As for their entry-level white Vin Blanc, the Vin Rouge is made with sourced, organically farmed fruit from friends in the Cher Valley (the Puzelats' home turt in the Touraine). The bunches are kept whole and fermented spontaneously and carbonically with a short maceration and no sulfur. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and bottled with a maximum of 20 mg/l of SO2. In 2019, this is a gorgeous juicy fresh wine, showing lovely round black raspberry and blackberry fruit, supple, sapid and refreshing, really a perfect thirst-quenching Gamay. There is never enough of this beautiful wine to go around, so don't delay. As always the glass is hard to put down as it should be and is a benchmark of which there are now many imitators.

Isolated from other agriculture, the vines of Tue-Boeuf are part of a mosaic of hedges and forests which make up a balanced ecosystem. While some vines are 115 years-old, the majority of the parcels date from the renovation of the vineyards in the 1960’s by Jean and Solange Puzelat. The Puzelat brothers began working in their family Domaine in the early 1990s, and at the heart of the operation is the 10-hectare family estate—the Clos du Tue-Boeuf—in the Cheverny appellation. Two things define the Puzelat brothers' rare wines: the diversity of their cuvées, and their tenacious work with nearly-extinct grape varieties that were common in the Loire not so long ago, but were put aside by the AOC for reasons having more to do with commercial simplification than quality and terroir. The vineyards are tended on organic lines (their father never used chemicals), weed control being achieved by ploughing, and grass planted to provide further competition. The fruit is hand-harvested by a large and willing team, many of them part of the extended family - perhaps not that surprising when you consider that Thierry and Jean-Marie are just two out of seven children.

Dead vines are replaced by tip-layering adjacent vines, an ancient method which avoids the over-representation of clones in the vineyard; it has the advantage of being very cheap, but the disadvantage of creating a vine which is franc de pied, on its own roots, rather than on a phylloxera-resistant rootstock.

Once picked the grapes are transferred to the winery and are fermented with minimal intervention; the whites are pressed and the juice decanted off and transferred for fermentation into cask, where the wine remains on its lees until it is bottled straight from this vessel, without racking.

As for the reds, whole bunches are fermented in open-topped 40-hectolitre wooden vats beneath a blanket of carbon dioxide, with pressing by foot once fermentation is underway. The wine is then transferred into casks where, like the white wines, they remain until they are bottled without further racking.

For small-volume fermentation's Puzelat also has some 30-hectolitre fibreglass vats and some smaller vessels. The cellars are temperature controlled, although the vats themselves aren't; the environmental control might help a little in damping down the fermentation temperatures though. Sulphur use throughout is minimal, with most wines seeing no added sulphur except perhaps for a small dose at the time of bottling.

COLLE CORVIANO PINOT GRIGIO 2019

ABRUZZO, ITALY
QUAINT QUINCE CLOVER
CLASSIC / 12.5 % ALC /750ML

Colle Corviano sits in the shadows of Gran Sasso, the winery practices ‘hyper reductive’ winemaking, producing tight aromatic wines. The Pinot Grigio offers stewed quince and apple, all held together by a pleasing acidic backbone.

From the producer: At Colle Corviano, estate-vineyard blocks are vinified separately and traced throughout the production process. Each vineyard block has been delineated and planted based on the accumulated knowledge of soil profile and chemistry, aspect (orientation to the sun), slope (vertical degree impacting the potential for drainage), and overall climate. Terroir defines our plantings, without regard to what may be fashionable today. Each block has its unique geological history, which provides distinctive flavours. As the roots of the vines forge deep into the earth, their individuality becomes more pronounced. The grapes from these blocks were planted in 1973. The Colle Corvino Parcel totals 15 hectares and is located adjacent to Picciano, Colle Corviano and Loreto Aprutino with an elevation of 300 meters above sea level. The vineyard has 7 hectares of Montepulciano and 8 hectares of Trebbiano.

BRIGHT SILKY ELEGANT
CLASSIC / 750ML

From the distributor: 2019 Bourgogne Cuvée de Noble Souche Comes mostly from vines planted in 1947 in Champ Forey (80%) to the east of the village with the other 20% coming from vines in Chambolle Musigny. The fruit is hand-picked and 100% de-stemmed and fermented in stainless steel to produce a fresh, vibrant style. The palate shows a generosity and depth rare for this level. Ripe, stylish and beautifully balanced for enjoyment now. Very limited.

Created in 1987, the Marsannay Villages appellation is a relatively new one in Burgundy but an ancient and well respected source of fine wine. Located on the southern outskirts of Dijon at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, Marsannay missed out when the first Villages appellations were handed out in 1930. But it wasn’t because the terroir was deemed inferior. It was simply that there was very little Chardonnay or Pinot Noir planted.

The terroir of Marsannay is based on the same complex Jurassic limestone-based geology that runs the entire length of the Côte d’Or. But for the previous hundred years or more, Marsannay’s winemakers had been focussed on the growing suburban population of Dijon. A task made much more commercially successful with wines made from Aligoté and Gamay.

The Collottes have been grape growers in Marsannay for four generations, but it wasn’t until 1981 that a young, 16 year-old Philippe Collotte bottled the first wine under the name of Domaine Collotte. He subsequently purchased some mature vineyards of about 40 years of age in both Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, to further expand the domaine’s repertoire.

In 2013 Philippe was joined by his daughter Isabelle, who had just completed her viticulture and oenology studies at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune. Whilst Isabelle focusses particularly on the production of the domaine’s white wines, there is no doubt that her addition to the team has helped refine the quality of the wines across the board. Today Domaine Collotte farms 17ha of vines (16ha currently in production) in Marsannay, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. This a source of accomplished, stylish and very attractively priced Burgundy.

100% de-stemmed with week long cold soak at 10c gradually raising temperature with pigeage for first half of ferment following by remontage for second half before pressing and ageing in 25% new oak for top reds. Rousseau Allegro barrels used for all wines to allow each terroir to express themselves consistently.

DAPPLED APPELLATION CHARDONNAY 2020

YARRA VALLEY, VICTORIA
BRULEE LINE CITRUS
CLASSIC / 750ML

A lively acid-washed Chardonnay that has lees presence, but not weight. The grapes are hand harvest and whole bunch pressed, leading to a gentle flinty nutty edge with a tidy array of white petals and citrus.

A blend of upper and lower Yarra Vineyards - Clones P58, I10V1 and Dijon clones 76 and 95 - from three vineyards in Steels Creek, Seville and Macclesfield. All fruit is hand-picked and cooled overnight, followed by whole bunches being lightly crushed by foot before a long pressing when the un-sulphured juice is transferred straight to oak. The oak is a combination of 80% old and 20% new French Barriques, Puncheons and Demi-Muids. Ferments are allowed to start naturally (wild) and complete with no temperature control. The wine is not battonaged and left on lees for 10 months where some MLF may have occurred, but not encouraged, and SO2 is added when the wine is ready for it. The wine is lightly filtered before being bottled un-fined.

This 2020 rendition is closer to my 2017 than anything else in the past, maybe even slightly more generous. The season produced a beautifully fragrant wine with white flowers and citrus aromas with complex grilled hazelnuts, mille-feuille and hints of flint and smoke. The palate is precise and textured with white stone fruit flavours and citrus mineral line. While absolutely delicious now, as I have seen with the 2017’s this wine will blossom with time and patience.

BRIMMING TOAST CURRANT
CLASSIC / 750ML

A polished Cabernet Blend that is light on its feet and fruit forward. 18 months in old oak has given the wines a nostaglic spiced edge. Soft, textured and orderly acid - great wine!

From the Producer: Made from the Steels Creek Vineyard and grown by Simon Peirce, this vineyard was planted in 1981 and produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc . The blend is 84% Cab Sav and 16% Cab Franc with 20% whole bunches included in the ferment. Its fermented with wild yeast and had 18 months in old French oak barriques.

This variety is one that the Valley used to be widely recognised for and I’ve been wanting to bring it to life for some time. The resulting wine is brimming with bright black currant and blackberry fruits with hints of spice and toast. The palate has soft, textured berry fruits with very gentle tannins and light bright acidity… is certainly isn’t the tannic and oaky beast that Cabernet is often known for. Fantastic winter drinking!

BRIGHT CLEAN PRETTY
CLASSIC / HVE3 / 750ML

A clean-cut Pinot Noir from two very different regions in France, the Languedoc and the Loire Valley. The differences in climate and site build a robust ripe Pinot Noir that highlight variety rather than place. Strawberries, ripening plums and wet straw.

Sourced from the Paris wine company: The fruit that goes into the Deux Moulins cuvée is a blend of Pinot Noir from the Loire Valley and the Languedoc. The Loire Valley component comes from sand and gravel vineyards in Chateaumeillant and adds elegance and finesse. The Languedoc fruit adds a fruity richness. Together, they create an exceptionally delicious French Pinot Noir.

JURA, FRANCE
FLINT CASHEW COMPLETE
LEFT OF CENTRE / ORGANIC / 750ML

The longefin vineyard has been certified Organic since 2007, however, Didier goes a step further taking a holistic stance in his vineyards promoting diversity and sustainability. The wine is a nutty reductive Savagnin aged in topped barrels. Muted fruits bring forward honeyed toast and lees.

From the Producer: This uncompromising vigneron knows that his oxidative end result is as much a product of natural winemaking as it of natural farming. He believes good wine starts with the vine, and his hard work and dedication to his vineyards are a tribute to nature.

Didier Grappe completed his studies at the viticulture wine school in Beaune, Burgundy in 2001, and in 2007 his domain was certified organic by Ecocert. Situated in Saint-Lothain within the Côtes-du-Jura appellation, Domaine Didier Grappe farms 3.5 hectares of local varietals across three separate parcels around the village—Champs Rouge, Novelin, and Longefin.

Half a hectare is planted with the red varietals (Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Trousseau), with three hectares dedicated to Chardonnay and Savagnin. These are rooted in grey and red marl soils, which he tends to with the utmost respect. No chemical treatments are used in the vineyard, and his winemaking involves no cultured yeasts or tannins, and is void of chaptalisation, acidification, filtering, and fining. “Grapes only”, as he would say.

His wines are much like his personality—refined and restrained, with a slight amount of tension.

ENVINATE ALBAHRA GRENACHE 2019

ALBACETE, SPAIN
SAVOURY SEA CRUNCH
CLASSIC / 750ML

Pretty unadulterated Grenache from the mainland. Aged in old oak and concrete, Envinate has pursued pure fruit rather than making wine in the cellar. The wine has a crunchy edge with bright rhubarb and saltbush.

From the Distributor: Envinate's Albahra comes from a remote and unique place and from rare varietals, with this 2019, the latest release the best yet. Made in the Almansa region close to the town of Albacete near Castilla-La Mancha, influenced by the near by Mediterranean Sea

Envinate, which literally translates as “wine yourself,” is the project of four passionate young winemakers: Roberto Santana, Jose Martinez, Laura Ramos and Alfonso Torrente. The four met while studying oenology in Alicante in 2005 and formed a collective based on a shared philosophy of wine and a desire to explore the ancient, Atlantic influenced terroirs of western Spain.

In 2008, the group bought their first vineyard in Ribera Sacra, then took control of vineyards on the north of Tenerife and then ba single patch of Tinta Amarela in Extremadura. Finally, in 2012, they began working a site in Almansa,  planted with Garnacha Tintorera. In each place, the team care for old abandoned vineyards and move frequently around the country.

The Envinate group pride themselves on their work in the vines: a collective of viticulturalists, rather than travelling winemakers. The core of Envinate is a shared philosophy around four critical aspects of their wine:
1. The personality of the site
2. The character of the vintage
3. The soul of the people who work among the vines
4. Not fucking around in the winery because that’s how you make coke.

In the winery, concrete or old oak barrels are used for fermentation and ageing. Sulphur is used only at bottling in minuscule proportions. The labels all acknowledge the vineyards owners, the village and often the soil type.

It’s easy to focus on the passionate and diligent people behind Envinate, but that would be to miss the point of what they do: more than anything else, Envinate is an attempt to express a place and a time through wine.

FORADORI LEZER TEROLDEGO 2019 1.5L

MEZZOLOMBARDO, ITALY
SUMMER EXPERIMENTAL VIBRANT
LEFT OF CENTRE / ORGANIC / 1500ML

A series of hailstorms and heavy rainfall during the vintage led to the creation of the Teroldego heavy, Lezer. Teroldego is usually a heavy red but due to the weather the team had to react to salvage anything and we're glad they did. The fruit was split up into a series of trial batches with the only control being the wine was left on skins for 24hrs. In the glass, the wine offers pomegranate molasses, berries, concrete texture and a punchy swirling aroma. Delicious.

From the Producer: The idea of creating a light Teroldego to celebrate the summer was something that interested us for some time but it wasn’t until the hail storms of August 2017, which destroyed 40% of our harvest that we decided to have a go. From the small amount of fruit harvested from the damaged vines we were able to piece together a number of vinification tests with short maceration processes to make Lezèr. We undertook various batch tests in amphorae, wood, cement and steel, never leaving the grapes on the skins for more than 24 hours.

This wine was born with the spirit of experimentation and continues to develop in this way. Overseeing the various developments that take place in each vintage, each year we experiment with the addition of full bunches and changing containers, along with tweaking our techniques and timings for short maceration. Depending on the vintage, the grapes

FRANCOIS LAMARCHE CLOS VOUGEOT VOSNE-ROMANEE PINOT NOIR 2017

BURGUNDY, FRANCE
PURE DELICATE BRIGHT
CLASSIC / 750ML

I first tried these wines at a small Restaurant in France called Pot D'Etain. The bottle was to this day the great red Burgundy (Les Malconsorts) I've had in my life. The Clos Vougeot is a delicate example of the vineyard with at least 80% of the fruit being destemmed. It spends roughly two weeks on skins before being pressed to oak (60-100% new oak) for a minimum of 16 months. I still get giddy thinking about that wine.

From the Distributor: The rapid, Lazarus-like rebirth of this Domaine seems to have caught some quarters of the French cognoscenti by complete surprise. In fact it has been the English speaking commentators like Allen Meadows, Jasper Morris, Jancis Robinson and Clive Coates that have been the first to pick up the scent. This is a tale of Domaine François Lamarche, an Estate that has, without doubt, one of the finest collections of vineyards in the entire Côte or, more specifically, Vosne Romanée/Echézeaux. After a long period of underperformance, the Domaine has managed to turn its fortunes around and is today producing wines that honour the lofty expectations of their holdings. To be specific about these holdings, Domaine François Lamarche are sole owners of La Grande Rue - one of the four, legendary Grand Cru monopoles of Vosne-Romanée - as well as holding choice parcels of Echézeaux, Grands Echézeaux, Clos de Vougeot, Suchots, Chaumes and Malconsorts! Terroir was never a problem here!

The upturn in quality has been the result of a gradual series of key changes, most significant of which has been the emergence and ensuing influence of the Domaine's 6th generation, Nicole and Nathalie Lamarche, who now control every aspect of Domaine François Lamarche’s operations. Since 2007 Nicole Lamarche has been solely in charge of the vineyards and winemaking while her cousin, Nathalie Lamarche, has had the role of régisseur, or general manager. Since taking the reins of this jewel of an estate, these ladies have seriously reduced yields, converted the vineyards to organic viticulture (certified from 2010), implemented procedures to handle their grapes more gently and have stopped fining or filtering. The barrel suppliers have also been changed and there is less new wood used. In short they have pulled out all stops to produce the highest possible quality from their remarkable patrimony of vineyards. These changes, combined with a new, gravity-fed cuverie and a much needed upgrade of equipment and new cooling apparatus (that had already occurred in 2010), has resulted in a rapid improvement in quality that continues to improve each year.

PITH PURITY SALINE
LEFT OF CENTRE / NO TREATMENTS / 750ML

Destemmed and lightly crushed Grecanico Dorato and Carricante. Three days on skins and then aged in neutral tanks. The resulting wine is a lively white, pure fruited with a volcanic edge.

From the Producer: Our first white wine started out as an orange wine, fermented with the skins for an extended period. I liked the tactile feeling and density, but missed the finesse and precision of the classic French white wines from for example the Loire. With the vintage 2015 I changed our technique to search for the purity and flavors of Etna which evolved in maintaining a short period of skin contact and aging our white wines for an extended period in the coldest part of our cellar before bottling. The obtained elegance, purity and density makes this wine very suited to accompany a wide variety of dishes and cuisine, from fish to white meat.

FRANKLAND ESTATE ALTER WEG RIESLING 2020

FRANKLAND RIVER, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
GUN TANGERINE CRYSTALLINE
LEFT OF CENTRE / NO SO2 / 750ML

Large format oak + no adds + fruit from one of Australia's best Riesling producers = Alter Weg. A long slow prerss cycle has given a tea-like quality that is sharpened with gun barrel flint and tactile minerality. Voluminous mouth feel with sip indusing acidity.

From the Producer: No additions of any kind are used in the making of Alter Weg Riesling. All riesling grapes are harvested as cool as possible and pressed immediately, slow press cycles allow for soft and long extraction of juice.

Picking decisions are made on ripeness and fruitfulness, with the main aim of working with natural balance yet seeking greater ripeness. A cloudy juice is run to a combination of 1000ltr and 500ltr barrels.

Alter Weg translates to the “old way” describing our approach to this riesling. Ripe balanced riesling fruit is harvested and gently pressed to large format barrel where it undergoes wild yeast fermentation. A further 10 months of aging on full lees in barrel result in a superbly textured riesling with approachability and generosity of fruit supported by the creamy textural element of this vibrant riesling.

Lightly golden colour supports the slightly riper tone and more oxidative approach to juice. Tangerine notes and a seductive saline morishness support the delicate aroma of spice and the juicy ripe citrus tones.

Mineral yet juicy palate, initially a very slight reduction aroma of gun smoke/ironstone gives way to the fruitfulness and volume of this wine as it opens up. Saline and crystalline notes give freshness and brightness which is followed by a soft textural line that gives the  wine a fullness and completeness. The tension of this wine masterfully balances the fruitful yet savoury palate with a deliciousness and mouth-watering finish from the fine well-rounded acidity.

The barrel maturation gives the wine a notable roundness and fullness whilst in keeping with the fine line achieved by our organic rieslings at Frankland Estate. A complex balanced Riesling that will gain further complexity with age

AY CHAMPAGNE FRANCE
MOOD MOUSSE GENEROUS
CLASSIC / BRUT DOSAGE 7g L / 750ML

A Pinot Noir predominant (80%) Champagne, Aÿ Grand Cru 100%, aged ‘en latte’, laying horizontally for 2 years to maximise lease contact. A generous wine offering ripe strawberry, toasted notes, and a dry clinical finish.

From the producer: Like all of the blends, the Champagne GATINOIS Brut Tradition is a true reflection of the Aÿ terroir’s unique character. It is made from the “heart of the terroir” of the family Domaine. Predominantly Pinot Noir (80%) which brings richness, structure and a delicious character. The 20% of Chardonnay adds a feminine touch to the blend. There is also a significant proportion of reserve wines in the blend (30%). The champagne is aged “sur lattes” (horizontally on racks) in our cellars for a minimum of 2 years before the yeasts are disgorged. A deep golden hue with coppery reflections indicates the richness of this blend. The nose opens with fresh notes of pears and lime blossom which give way to more intense, complex aromas and a characteristic Pinot Noir vinosity. Our Brut Tradition is fresh on entry to the palate with a good balance between fruit and finesse, a nice round structure and ripe fruit aromas which evolve into toasty notes. With its discreet sugar dosage (7g/l), this Champagne is well-suited to aperitifs, accompanied by foie gras toasts or sushi. Try it with seafood or a sea scallop carpaccio.

GAVOTY LA CIGALE ROSÉ NV

PROVENCE, FRANCE
GAMAY SAVOURY CHIRPY
ROSE / 750ML / 13%

A thoughtful rose produced on the Triassic Plateau made up of clay and limestone. A poppy Gamay based rose, that offers apple, silage and a shortcrust savoury edge.

From the Distributor: Situated in the village of Cabasse, fifty kilometres from Saint-Tropez, Domaine Gavoty has all the magic of Provence. Purchased by Philémon Gavoty in 1806, the Domaine remains a family affair under Roselyne Gavoty. Throughout the last two centuries, the Gavoty family has persevered, sometimes against the odds, to see their village gain the viticultural recognition it deserves. Cabasse now stands proud as an official part of the Côte de Provence appellation.

The vineyard is planted on the ancient “Triassic plateau” – a prime, clay and limestone rich soil layer.  Some plots of vineyard are planted on challenging and rocky earth. This forces the Domaine to conduct most farming by traditional hand methods, meaning little has changed in 200 years of harvesting at Gavoty. The vines are sheltered from the most extreme Provençal weather by beautiful thickets of oak and pine forest. These old forests are integral to both the vitality and sustainability of the Domaine, stabilising the local climate and creating better growing conditions for the vineyards. But the extremities of Provençe are also key to what makes Gavoty wine so exceptional. The roasting summers and bitter winters mean grapes mature slowly. To endure, the vines are forced to find water deep within the limestone rich soil. This in turn brings a trademark minerality and freshness to Domaine Gavoty wines that embodies the region and consecrates the hardships of the climate.

Another of Domaine Gavoty’s delightful idiosyncrasies is not environmental but auricular! The family have a resplendent musical heritage including Bernard Gavoty (1906-1980) – a music critic for France’s “Le Figaro” newspaper who, mystifyingly, wrote under the English pseudonym “Clarendon”. Today, the Domaine’s top three cuvées of white, red and Rosé share this quirky, anglo nom de plume. The family’s musical heritage is also celebrated in their exquisite labels, which proudly feature the Domaine’s ancient emblem, a Grecian lyre. Roselyne Gavoty, grand-daughter of Bernard ‘Clarendon’ Gavoty, has now been at the helm of the Domaine since 1985. She continues a family legacy with humility, first class winemaking and a passion for this pocket of Procençal paradise.

FOSSIL CITRUS FRESH
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

Gently harvested and whole bunch pressed to stainless steel vats where it is aged on lees. A refreshing Petit Chablis made by Guillaume Vrignaud (Domaine Vrignaud) the Grandson of George Deschamps. The wine is unmistakable Chablissiene.

From the producer: Everyone has their interpretation of what Chablis should be, the style it should take. Operating 29 hectares around Fontenay-près-Chablis, Domaine Vrignaud has a very specific approach to the terroir. To be turned towards the future is first of all to be aware of its heritage and to wish in every way to defend it. At the Domaine, this involves knowing the plots located on the Portlandian and Kimmeridgian strata, taking care of the vines, whether they are clones or whether they come from mass selection and naturally organic farming. Organic Agriculture is not an end, it is a way of thinking, a means of revealing the terroir.

A wine is born in the vineyard, not in the cellar. Pressing, vinification limiting inputs, the use of vats or barrels bring to light the soils, subsoils, climate, berries and know-how of the Domaine. This know-how and this constant attention nourish a style of Chablis wines day after day. More than a style of wine, it is the culmination of a philosophy. This philosophy, our philosophy, is balance. The balance between the vines and the environment, the berries and the geology, the wines and the emotions that they must provoke in each of the tasters.

Goisot is situated on deep chalky soils just outside of the Chablis AOC. The wines showcase the personality of the region with a gentle flair added by the producers oak regime and lees integration. I lively drop that accentuates the versatility of Chardonnay.

From the Distributor: Goisot is located just outside the Chablis AOC. In 2014 Guilhem Goisot inherited a small, 0.4-hectare parcel of Chablis in Bienes, just north of Chitry, planted by the father of his wife, Marie, in 1976. The lieu-dit is called Faucertaine and the fossil-ridden, limestone soils here--which Goisot likens to his Côte d'Auxerre Gondonne vineyard--have been farmed biodynamically since the Domaine took over in recent years. Fermented in tank before aging in used 500-litre barrels on lees, this, just the second vintage, is a chip off the Goisot block. Expect a scintillating, sculpted Chablis with controlled ripeness and texture cloaked in minerals and racy freshness. Some serious power to go with the deliciousness and mineral intensity that are so typical of the best Chablis.

GRAMENON SIERRA DU SUD SYRAH 2020

MONTBRISON SUR LEZ, FRANCE
TAPENADE SPICE VELVET
CLASSIC / ORGANIC BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

Partially destemmed Syrah fermented for 15 days in concrete tanks. A pure expression of Syrah. Lively dark fruits balanced out with savoury olive tapenade, tar and stemmy grip. A truly dynamic wine, every year it has something else to offer.

From the Distributor: My dream of Syrah; is produced entirely from old (65 year old) vines from the Gramenon estate and delivers pure, billowing aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, violet, lightly seared meat and gravel. Plush and velvety in the mouth, it has sensual tannins and lively acidity that give it a super definition, shape and long finish. This is one of my favourite wines of anywhere every single year and I am assured by Michele we have another absolute beauty in 2020. The fruit is fermented without sulphur using indigenous yeasts. Everything is moved by gravity, there are no pumps.  Some cuvees are aged in vat and others in old demi-muids and foudres. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration with only some cuvees receiving light amounts of sulphur.

This style of non-interventionist winemaking 'par excellence has forged the estate a legendary reputation and following. The wines age wonderfully when correctly stored, a 1991 Ceps Centenaires tasted recently only just starting to fade but still delicious, it's once sultry youth transformed over time into a gentle and beautiful whisper.

The original estate in Montbrison-Sur-Lez lies in the Drôme and interestingly, following consolidation, the vines they now have are all located in the cold, Northern Drôme department and not the Vaucluse department that lies underneath, where 95% of Côtes du Rhône come from.

Michele and Maxime sold a couple of parcels - notably all of the vines in Valreas that used to produce their Côtes du Rhône "L'Elementaire" and a parcel of Syrah in Vinsobres that used to go into the "La Papesse" - in fact with the sale of the Syrah and it's now complete absence from the blend, "La Papesse" has lost it's right to the AOC Vinsobres. They don't mind of course, they always want to make the best wine possible and were not entirely happy with the Syrah. To replace the surface that has been sold they found a superb isolated (they love isolated parcels) 2 ha parcel in Taulignan of Grenache and Syrah that they harvested for the first time in 2019.

GUNDERLOCH FRITZ RIESLING GERMANY 2020
GUNDERLOCH FRITZ RIESLING GERMANY 2020

GUNDERLOCH FRITZ RIESLING GERMANY 2020

RHEINHESSEN, GERMANY
BALANCE TYPICAL STONEFRUIT
CLASSIC / TOUCH OF SWEETNESS / 750ML

A whisker of sweetness has given life to this linear slatey Riesling. It offers honeydew melon, stonefruit and a sherbet-like minerality. The wine is named in honour of his late Father, Frtiz who passionately but weingut Gunderloch on the map.

From The Distributor: Fritz's Riesling grows in a very small and special part of Rheinhessen called the Roter Hang, a name meaning “red hill“ due to its red-slate soils. The Roter Hang is located between the village of Nackenheim and the village of Nierstein, 20km south of the city of Mainz. The red colour comes from a high proportion of minerals and iron in the soil. The vineyards are very close to the river Rhine, face south-east and they have steep slopes. The combination of those four factors - the red slate soil, the proximity to the river, the exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards - are perfect for producing wonderful ripeness. The wine shows lovely stone fruit, fresh natural acidity, spice and aromatic lift. Dry, fresh and full of character.

Johannes Hasselbach has well and truly hit his stride after taking the winemaking reins from his late father Fritz a few years back. Warm, charming, modest and brilliant Fritz Hasselbach, who passed away from illness in October 2016, was the man who lifted the estate into the Rheinhessen's top flight. Johannes and the team are taking it even further, turning out stunning wines from top-rated vineyards of the Roter Hang, a steep hill of red slate overlooking the Rhine. The dry Rieslings are intensely concentrated and expressive of the red volcanic soil. The fruity wines are even more so, with their touch of sweetness that acts as a conduit for flavour and aroma. Nackenheimer Rothenberg is one of the great vineyards of Germany

HEYMANN LOWENSTEIN RIESLING 2018

MOSEL, GERMANY
ACID LINE PERFUME
CLASSIC / 750ML

The steep slated Lowenstein vineyards are handpicked and whole bunch pressed. A great example of thoughtful Mosel Riesling. Quenching with high floral notes, flint lines and tactful residual sugar. Stunning.

From the Distributor: The Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling bottling comes from declassified grapes from the family's Schieferterrassen vineyards - essentially the premier-cru sites of Hamm and Brückstück. These are very steep slate sites that are organically farmed. The grapes are very gently pressed as whole bunches before indigenous-yeast fermentation (around 30% in old casks, 70% stainless steel) before a long period of lees contact and relatively late bottling.

While unfettered pleasure is the reflex response elicited by classic Mosel Riesling, the often overt power and disorienting range of Heymann-Löwenstein tends to be more thought-provoking. Reinhard Löwenstein views his craft as a creative interplay between climate, soil, vine and grower, culminating in wines that are singular, authentic and complex. The wines he makes with daughter Sarah never fall short on that count, and the 2012s are the most complete we’ve seen.

The descriptor trocken is banned from his vocabulary and anybody foolish enough (not me!) to enquire about levels of residual sugar is duly and properly chastised. He probably considers the alcohol content another irrelevant detail in the greater scheme of things, but the law is an ass and requires that information to be given. What matters to Löwenstein is terroir, and tasting his wines from different plots within the same vineyard, his credo is convincing. Michael Schmidt, jancisrobinson.com

HOLLY'S GARDEN UBER BRUT

WHITLANDS PLATEAU VICTORIA
SOLERA NUT ALTITUDE
CLASSIC / 11.5% / 750ML

A brilliantly off-kilter example of high country fizz. The uber-brut utilises a solera system to add structure and dimension to an already exciting chardonnay base wine. Zero dosage sharpens the palette and keeps the wine en pointe

From the producer: In 2OO7, I started making sparkling base from pinot noir fruit from the Holly’s Garden vineyard. At that stage, I had no idea how I’d get it to bottle, but believed the vineyard might produce extraordinary sparkling base – and it does. I strongly believe we make fabulous, distinctive sparkling wine from the same fruit every vintage. These days the free run juice is allowed to oxidise and is fermented mostly in large old oak, with a small proportion in tank and inoculated with approximately 5 per cent of the recommended dose of QA23 (a vinho Verde isolate, which produces a delightful tang). The low dose is used so that we get a long slow fermentation with a large number of generations of yeast. In this way, the yeast begins to find the ethanol toxic and produces mucyl polyproteins and gucyl polyglycerides.

During this time, Gerhard converted his vineyard practices to biodynamic farming and Alex took these principles and applied them to the family farm in 2007. Prior to 2011, the family sold their fruit off to local producers.

There are 5 vineyard sites incorporated in the 6 hectares, all located around the village of Neusiedl am See, known as Seefeld, Neuberg, Prädium, Hutweide and Schafbühl.

LA CADETTE LA CHATELAINE VEZELAY CHARDONNAY 2018

VEZELAY, FRANCE
PURE EXCITING PRECISE
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

A truly inspiring wine. The Chatelaine sees no oak and is a raw unadulterated example of Chardonnay. By keeping the Chardonnay 'pure' the site and season are forced to centre stage. the site - Vezelay, is comprised of various types of clay (blue-red) over shallow limestone. the combination of the two soil types gives it a unique typicity that straddles both Burgundy (Cote D'Or) and Chablis. The season - was shorter than average yielding higher levels of alcohol (13.5%) over a shorter period of time. The alcohol level in the Chatelaine isn't overwhelming and in fact, complements the fruit profile and underlying minerality of the wine.

From the Distributor: The wine comes from grapes from the vineyards on the pretty south-facing slopes of the Vézelay hills. The grapes are harvested by hand and then fermented naturally in stainless steel tanks. This is a beautifully-textured wine, showing that white wines of considerable elegance can be produced in this region. All of the La Cadette wines are made with skill and care and result in clean, clear, flavoursome wines of great elegance. Rarely do you find such consistency of flavour and texture as in the wines of this Domaine. It is easy to determine why many of the great restaurants of Europe including Le Chateaubriand and others stocks the wines of this Domaine.

LA GARRELIERE MARQUIS DE C CHARDONNAY 2018

LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE
CLEAN TEXTURE PURE
CLASSIC / ORGANIC BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

Chardonnay from 30-year-old vines, aged in 500l Futs, without batonage. A fresh yet rich Chardonnay from Touraine.

From the Distributor: The Marquis de C is a beautiful wine made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, which is rare in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley with Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc being more common. The grapes were pressed and the juice transferred to 500 litre wooden fûts for fermentation and maturation on lees for 12 months without any battonage. The grapes were hand harvested from thirty year old vines in early October with a yield around a very low 25 hectolitres per hectare. The vineyard soils are flint and flint clays sitting over limestone.

The name for this wine comes from one of the works of the prolific 17th Century French author Charles Perrault who either adapted or was the originator of many fairy tales including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots. It is from Puss in Boots that the character Marquis de Carabas is to be found and this fictional character is from where the name for this wine is derived.

Francois and Pascaline Plouzeau maintain an immaculate vineyard near the fascinating village of Richelieu which lies south of Tours quite close to the Chinon region. Here they implement strict biodynamic vineyard practices which are certified by Ecocert and Biodyvin. A feature of their lovely wines is the wonderful set of labels produced by local artists that reflect the naming of the wine. So the racy Cendrillon white, as the name suggests, has a Cinderella theme. Tasmanians will note a Samek-like whimsy in some of the paintings.

Their wines have been very well-received in the United States with the Washington Post raving about the straight Sauvignon Blanc and Parker rating the Cendrillon highly in edition 172 of the Wine Advocate.

STRAW TEXTURE ALMOND
CLASSIC / BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

Verdicchio grown at 400masl in the district of San Michele, Marche. The vines are carefully managed to respect the natural cycles in which they occupy. Cover crops are cycled throughout the vineyard to reduce evaporation, build carbon and nitrogen. The wine is aged on lees for 8 months creating a textural white displaying almond meal, cut straw and nashy pear.

From the Producer: 100% from Verdicchio grapes. Fermentation in large wooden barrels where it matures "sur lie" for 8 months. Aging for 12 months in the bottle.

Once the bottom of the Adriatic Sea, the hills here were formed more than 5 million years ago. Full sun exposures and calcareous soils with a predominance of clays, marls and gypsum characterize the district of San Michele, 400 meters above sea level. Our grapes are generally harvested early, in September.

We prune using the guyot method, extract and tie by hand. We do not top. Grass cutting is mechanical, we use green manure of leguminous beans, peas, vetch, sainfoin and alfalfa. We make biodynamic treatments with cornoletame. Against powdery mildew and downy mildew we use mine sulfur (not derived from petroleum) and Bordeaux mixture. We use rainwater collected from the roofs and produce electricity with photovoltaic panels. We faithfully respect the lunar cycle in all processes.

GREAT SOUTHERN, WEST AUSTRALIA
JUICE SPICE BERRY
CLASSIC / 750ML

Awash with every red coloured fruit you can think of. Light, bright and playful. Drink anywhere, anytime with anything.

From the Distributor: YeYe Rouge (Pinot Noir, Syrah + Tempranillo) Low yielding clonal Pinot Noir from Denmark makes up the heart of the blend, bringing lifted red fruits, musk and herbal notes, with Syrah contributing spice and structure. Plenty of stalks, whole berries and carbonic in here, all wild fermented, then pressed to oak to complete malolactic fermentation. The Syrah comes from an ironstone gravelly loam site west of Mt Barker; mid-weight, juicy, spicy. A splash of Meunier brings dark-fruited aromatics and a different angle on the palate. Six months in oak and early to bottle keeps the style where I like it - bright, layered, juicy, with some savoury scratch. Unfined. Sulphur dioxide added just before bottling.

From the Producer: La Violetta began producing small quantities of wine at Denmark, on Western Australia’s south coast, in 2008. Grapes are sourced from a handful of trusted growers with exceptional vineyards, some amongst the oldest in the state. The idea is to keep production at a small scale so that each wine is crafted with care.

Before being lured west by the quality of Great Southern grapes, winemaker Andrew Hoadley worked all over Australia’s cool and hot zones and in Piedmont, Abruzzo and Washington State. He now lives on Mt Shadforth, just out of Denmark town, and makes the wines in a small facility in the countryside.

The name ‘La Violetta’ derives from an old Piedmontese song celebrating intoxication.

CHERRY SPICE CASSIS
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

Grenache fermented for 6 days on skins. Aged on Lees in inert vessels before being sent to bottle without Sulphur. Fruit forward with bright cherries, cassis and henna. Unfiltered, unfined - raw.

From the Distributor: The region of Ardeche lies on the cusp between Northern and Southern Rhone. On the western bank of the river, up in the hills, is an affordable and dynamic wine area where an increasing number of young wine growers work with the same varieties as its well known neighbour. La Vrille et le Papillon (the tendril and the butterfly) is located in Valvigneres, the epi-centre of the Ardèche natural wine scene.

Meryl Croizier’s connection to vines and agriculture in Ardeche runs deep, his grandparents were vignerons and farmers. At the age of 18 Meryl spent vintage working with Gerald and Jocelyne Oustric at Domaine du Mazel, ecological producers for over 20 years, also located in Valvigneres. These brothers have been instrumental in the growth and nurturing of new winemakers in the area, renting vines to Sylvain Bock and Andrea Calek at the beginning of their wine paths. Meryl subsequently completed formal studies of Agriculture in Dijon and Oneology in Montpellier.

In 2012 Meryl and Geraldine, with three young children in tow, returned to the family vineyards to commence their own project. It was time to settle having spent many years travelling with Meryl working from the Macon through to the Madiran in the south west.

They have 5 hectares of vines comprised of Syrah, Merlot, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Ugni Blanc, planted on clay limestone soils with lots of pebbley rocks. They converted the handful of small plots that were not already farmed as such to organics, eschewing herbicides and pesticides. Since 2014 they have introduced tisanes and biodynamic practices also.

For their first two harvests, 2012 and 2013, Meryl and Geraldine made their wine in cellars belonging to friends. By 2014 their own cellar was complete and Le Vrille et la Papillon’s home was established. Vinification is done with wild yeasts only, the wines do not go through fining or filtration.

These wines have purity, vibrancy and freshness along with structure and acidity. They offer exceptional value as well as drinking pleasure.

From the producer: A light, bright and nimble Mediterranean wine, which transports you straight to Sicily, with gorgeous, sun-kissed fruit and nose heady with wildflowers.

Nerocapitano is what the locals in Filippo’s village call Frappato. The fruit here comes from twenty year old vines planted over clay and limestone some 430 metres above sea level. The grapes were fermented on the skins for seven days, before being pressed off to concrete vats for eight months of rest. This is the lightest and brightest version of this wine we have tried, a gorgeous shade of cherry in the glass, it impresses with gentle notes of wildflowers and bitter herbs. Bio certified by Q certificazioni

Azienda agricola Lamoresca” is a young, small agricultural farm in the heart of Sicily. We grow 1000 olive trees and 4 hectares of vineyard. We choose to let nature do its work in the field and in the cellar.

In the year 2000, we purchased our first piece of land, an olive grove with 46 very ancient olive trees of the local “Moresca”variety, after which we named our farm “Lamoresca”. Year after year, the farm growed and now we cultivate about 10 hectares of land, vineyard and olive grove, with the greatest respect for nature.
Lamoresca” is located in the hills, at an altitude of 430 metres above sealevel. The soil is of sandstone and clay. The climat is typical mediteranian : dry, very warm in the summer, very little rain.

The choosen variety of grapes are adapted to our soil and climate. We try to make a wine with a character of its own, without following fashion or trends. We make 3 red wines: “Lamoresca Rosso” is a blend of Nero d'Avola, Frappato and Grenache grapes, “Nerocapitano”, 100% Frappato, and "Mascalisi", a blend of Nerello Mascalese-grapes (70%) and Frappato. The white wine “Lamoresca Bianco”is made from Vermentino-grapes.

We pick the grapes, only when they are perfectly ripe. Fermentation takes place naturally, no yeast is added, in open barrels, temperature non-controlled.
We practice long maceration on the skin, for the red grapes, a little less for the white grapes. The aging continues in old wooden barrels and barrels of vitrified cement.
Our olive grove contains two varieties, typical of our area ; Moresca and Tonda Iblea. Our olives are hand picked and only the perfectly healthy ones are brought to the oil mill, where hygiene is of the highest standard. So we obtain an olive-oil extravergine, very fruity with delicate aromas and typically sicilian.

We work in the greatest respect for nature. Our products are artisanal and organic, bio-certified by Q Certificazioni.

We spend most of our time in the fields of the vinyard and olive grove, our true place of work. The weeds are managed mechanically and to nurture the soil we use cover crops, mostly local legumes. Only if necessary, sulfur based treatments are used against fungal diseases.

In the cellar we dedicate ourselves to showcasing the year's work between the rows of vines. The perfectly ripe grapes arrive in the cellar and are immediately destemmed. Fermentation occurs naturally, in open-top barrels; no yeast is added and the temperature is not controlled. For the red grapes we practice long maceration on the skins, while for the white grapes only a brief maceration is used. The aging continues in a combination of  cement tanks, plastic tanks  and old wooden barrels.

From the producer: A light, bright and nimble Mediterranean wine, which transports you straight to Sicily, with gorgeous, sun-kissed fruit and nose heady with wildflowers. A roughly 50:50 blend of Frappato and Nero d’Avola, with a touch of Moscato. This year the Frappato is sourced from his youngest vines at home and blended with a Nero d’Avola from Pachino.

PLUSH COMPLEX LIVELY
EDGY / BIODYNAMIC ORGANIC / 750ML

An intriguing insight into how complex Gamay can be. Fruit forward, with wild herbs, henna and a rewarding rawness.

From the Producer: The average age of the vines: between 45 and 70 years. First vines worked on biodynamic principles (500, 501 ...) since 2012. Vines certified in organic farming. Cup size according to the lunar calendar to regenerate the wood. Alternating soil ploughing and controlled natural grassing. Association of plants for spraying (nettle, buckthorn, etc.).

Cold carbonic maceration (around 10-12 ° C in vatting) for 20 to 22 days, avoiding any handling. Without sulphur or yeast. 50% in a 600 litre demi-muid, 25% in a 300 litre barrel, 25% in a 225 litre barrel for 8 months. Old barrel of minimum 6 wines. Racking and bottling by gravity, without filtration, without sulphur and according to the cycle of the moon. Keep in bottle for 10 months before sale.

Since 2008, all nine hectares of the estate have been conducted using biology and, gradually, since 2012, using biodynamic. The soil is the basis of our work. On its good health depends that of the vine and the quality of our wines to come. Paying attention to it and understanding its microbiology remains, in our opinion, the best path to take to guarantee its balance and translate the full expression of the terroir.

The preparations play a fundamental role in biodynamics. In order to preserve a living and evolving soil and to promote the symbiosis of microorganisms of plant and animal species, we add “500” to our soil. These organic preparations made from horn dung are used in addition to a supply of compost. In spring, we alternate phases of tillage (ploughing) with spontaneous grassing. The goal? Favour endemic flora in order to let a part of "wild nature" take back its rights... In this vein, we continually seek to improve the structure and humus contained in our soil. To meet its nutritional needs, a supply of organic matter is essential. Using a methodology developed by us, we produce "homemade" compost invigorated with biodynamic plant-based preparations. All of the treatments are carried out by combining plant extracts (nettle, horsetail, buckthorn, etc.) and/or essential oils.

CLEAN SAVOURY REFINED
CLASSIC / BIODYNAMIC / 750ML

Savoury dry rose made in a true Provence style. Organically farmed Grenache and Cinsault offer textural notes of melon, peach and persimmon.

From the Distributor: This rosé displays a wonderfully full fruited and fleshy appeal, showing more density and textural layering than many other Provence counterparts.  The low intervention winemaking throws elements of funk and texture, adding to the profile of peach, melon and wild strawberries.

Our 22 hectares of vines situated in the Vallée des Borrels are influenced by the sea due to their proximity to the Mediterranean. Our vines in terrace farming get all their resources in ancient lands from primitive era offering an acidic and ARGILOSCHISTEUX soil. All our vines have the appellation Côte de Provence and Côte de Provence La Londe. It allows us to elaborate wines with all the specificity of the local Provence. Moreover, biodynamic Agriculture implanted since the beginning allows the vines to reveal all the potential. In this place where biodiversity is preserved and protected, we are satisfied to make you discover the fruit of our labour, our passion.

The entire vineyard, aged from 10 years for the youngest, to 60 years for the oldest, is cultivated half in gobelet pruning, and half in tying wires.

LUCIANO SANDRONE VALMAGGIORE NEBBIOLO 2017

PIEDMONT, ITALY
HERB SOFT PURE
CLASSIC / ORGANIC / 750ML

Mouthfeel and felt, a texture driven wine with a subtle nose that leans toward wet rock rather than fruit-forward. a unique steep undulating subregion that sits on chalky sand. A beautiful insight into the versatility of nebbiolo.

From the producer: The Sandrone family farm is a continuous, three-hectare vineyard in the Valmaggiore area of Roero that they planted themselves in early 1990's. This is an extremely steep (50% gradient in places) and spectacularly beautiful terraced vineyard planted to a high density of 8,000 vines per hectare. The soil here, comprised of almost pure sand, littered with limestone fossils (i.e. chalky sand), gifts a remarkably perfumed and elegant expression of Nebbiolo, quite distinct from the denser styles of wine produced in the clay rich soils of Barolo and Barbaresco. The Valmaggiore vineyard is farmed meticulously and organically, and a strict sorting occurs each year to reach the level of purity and intensity we see in the glass today. Of course vine age is playing an ever greater role in the quality of this wine being released each year, and this is clearly one of the best examples we have shipped. Deep, fragrant and age-worthy, the 2017 offers up notes of dark cherry, pomegranate and tea, while the palate is super-fine, tightly wound and classy. There is superb purity of fruit and fine yet abundant tannins. If drinking now, the decanter is your friend. It will be even better with 5-10 years in the cellar.

"With scorching heat and little rain overall, there was reason for worry during the 2017 growing season at large, but in the Roero zone by the banks of the Tanaro river, the hilly Valmaggiore vineyards received more rain than other parts of Piedmont, so these grapes did not suffer as much. Lovely notes of red rose and some herbal tones appear on the nose of the 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, coupled with balsam, spice and rosemary. It's voluminous in the mouth, and while the Le Vigne Barolo tends to be the most floral and delicately ethereal of Sandrone's release, this bouquet is distinctive in its own way. It would be a nice pair with a mushroom risotto." 92 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

"The 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is bright, fruity and absolutely delicious. The warm vintage seems to have given the Valmaggiore an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness, which is not a bad thing for a wine that can at times be a bit lean. Sweet red berry fruit and floral notes are nicely pushed forward. The 2017 will benefit from a few years in bottle, which will allow the aromatics to develop, but it is impeccable in its balance and super-classy, even in the early going." 92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
